In line with the PPWR Regulation

With Kallfass-Wrap®, Kallfass Verpackungsmaschinen GmbH presents a sustainable packaging solution that can save up to 90% plastic. The packaging solution offers food producers maximum flexibility in the packaging process and supports compliance with the PPWR Regulation (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation).

Plastic reduction in food packaging gains importance

The debate on plastic waste and sustainable packaging systems gained new momentum in 2025. While a global UN agreement against plastic pollution failed in Geneva in August 2025, the European Union had already moved forward. The PPWR Regulation came into force in February 2025 as a central component of the European Green Deal.

The regulation aims to ensure that packaging is not only functional but also sustainable and resource-efficient in the future. For the food industry, this means that packaging systems must increasingly focus on material reduction, recyclability and circular economy principles.

Up to 90% less plastic in fresh food packaging

With Kallfass-Wrap®, Kallfass responds to these regulatory and ecological requirements. The new freshness pack for products such as sausage, cheese, meat or fish can reduce the plastic content by up to 90 percent, according to the company.

The system uses:
- trays made from renewable or recycled raw materials
- a thin barrier film
- a packaging design with sorted separability

The materials used can be returned to established recycling cycles. The aim is to keep packaging materials in circulation and minimise plastic waste.

Flexible packaging processes without predefined package sizes

In addition to material reduction, process flexibility is a key feature. Kallfass-Wrap® enables food producers to:

- freely select package sizes
- avoid restriction to predefined standard formats
- carry out quick format changes
- implement simple adjustments in the packaging process

This flexibility is particularly relevant for fresh food counters, variable product sizes and fluctuating sales volumes.
"Anyone who wants to can already do a great deal to achieve the goals of the PPWR - not only in Europe, but worldwide," says Jens Kallfass, CEO of Kallfass Verpackungsmaschinen GmbH.

"The potential to significantly reduce plastics in packaging is there. It simply needs to be applied."

Sustainable packaging between regulation and market requirements

The combination of regulatory pressure, increasing environmental awareness among consumers and rising recycling requirements is intensifying the innovation pressure on packaging manufacturers. Solutions that reduce plastic while ensuring product protection, shelf life and economic efficiency are becoming increasingly important.

Kallfass-Wrap® addresses these requirements through material reduction, material substitution and material recyclability.
