Simplifying the Online Classifieds Experience: The Story

The classifieds online were to simplify life. That was the promise. List something. Get a buyer. Done.

However, at some point in the process, it went awry.

Too many platforms. Too many logins. Excessive upgrade to premium pop-ups. And occasionally, as well, too many false enquiries that go nowhere. I have made attempts to use three various classified sites over the years, and to be honest, one of them was like an online ghost town. One of them seemed to have not been updated since 2012. The third one? Adequately good traffic, yet all helpful functions appeared behind a payment wall. Almost you could have sworn you heard your wallet sigh. The little but steady irritation, that frustration, is just what the idea behind Dealin was all about. Not a revolution. Not a great technological breakthrough.

The Issues that No One Discusses.

Classifieds are necessary to people and small businesses in Australia. They're not a luxury. They're survival tools.

● A Brisbane uni student who attempted to sell a secondhand laptop to pay the rent.
● A cafe proprietor in Melbourne who is seeking a part-time barista.
● A trade in Perth with a second hand ute.
● A Sydney home baker who is seeking new clients.

Different needs. Same struggle: disintegrated platforms.

You list a job on one site. A car on another. Property somewhere else. Then on top of that you use social media groups. Then you are suddenly the one that has five accounts, three inboxes and a few half-serious buyers that vanish in the middle of a conversation.

It's exhausting.

And SMEs feel it even more. Companies with small businesses do not have marketing departments. They do not even have time to optimize visibility funnels. They require exposure, and fast, and without thinking too much about it.

The integrated platform concept comes in at that point.

One Platform. Multiple Real-Life Needs.

The vision of Dealin was not a complex one, and perhaps that is the reason why it works.

Rather than dividing jobs, motors, property, services and listing on disconnected systems, all is in one place. You do not need to change the platform simply because you need something different.

And life changes constantly.

● Today you're selling a car.
● You are recruiting employees next month.
● In half a year you are selling a rental house.

Why reinvent the wheel every time?

A combined Classifieds Platform implies that individuals and SMEs will be able to develop in the same ecosystem. Familiar interface. Same account. Same messaging system. Less friction.

It sounds simple. It is simple. But simple is underrated.

User-Friendly... Without the Buzzwords

We should discuss usability, as in fact, the majority of platforms complicate it.

Easy to use does not imply fancy effects and disorienting interfaces. It should mean:

● In several minutes, you can post a listing.
● You do not have to resize your photos seventeen times before you can post them.
● It is possible to find messages by buyers.
● You do not have to have a tutorial video to edit your ad.

Something about it is very quiet and strong to strip away needless steps. No dramatic redesign. No over-engineered filters. Just clarity. And there comes a time when minimalism can be tedious. However, when you are in a hurry to sell something, it is good to be boring. Boring is efficient.

Community First, Not Just Transactions.

This is the point that most tech platforms lose: the classifieds are community-driven.

They're local by nature.

A person is not merely searching for a product when he/she is looking to acquire a second-hand bike in Adelaide. They are seeking somebody around them. Someone they can meet. A person with the same slang, familiar with the same suburbs.

Online classifieds are not Amazon. They're human marketplaces.

The Dealin community value is tilted towards that thought. It is not only about facilitating local connections, but also not only about digital listings. People gain as they are dealing directly with buyers and SMEs gain since they are reaching out to customers within the area without having to spend a lot of money on campaigns.

The SME Perspective: The Importance of Integration.

Small businesses are usually on a thin margin. No advertising dollar is wasted.

Conventionally, they would spend independently on:

Recruitment platforms
Marketplace
Property listings
Service directories

It adds up. Quickly.

Having an integrated platform, SMEs will be able to manage various needs in a single roof. A restaurant owner could also be promoting vacancies as well as selling second hand kitchen equipment. One of the mechanics might enumerate spares and advertise. A start up may hire employees and conduct product demand tests at the same time.

Those cross-functionalities help to save time - and time is money. Small operators with ten hats a day, in particular.

https://dealin.com.au/marketplace/

Not Perfect. And That's Okay.

Now, to be honest, there is no platform that can do it all.

You will still get the lowball offer every now and then.
You will still have to put up with, Is this available? messages at midnight.

You will still want buyers read the entire description.

Never was it the aim to be perfect.

It was reduction of friction.

Reduction of jumping between platforms.
Less confusion.
Less wasted effort.

At times, improvement does not involve creating something new. It is all about taking away what does not have to be there.

The Emotional Side of Classifieds.

This may sound melodramatic, however, classifieds are emotive spaces.

Cars are listed by people because they are upgrading.
They market furniture following separation.

When they are growing, they put job advertisements.
They include property in life changes.

It's not just commerce. It's changed.

A platform that takes that into consideration, an integrated platform, which does not feel corporate, is a different experience. A quieter one. A steadier one.

And in an online world where scale and speed are the order of the day, stability is invigorating.

Looking Ahead: The Vision

The vision is not about the long-term growth of the largest Classifieds Site in Australia.

It is about being the most useful one.

● A location where people and SMEs do not feel overwhelmed.
● Where it is easy to post a listing.
● Where community communication is local and actual.
● Where expansion does not involve leaping along the digital islands.

Will it evolve? Of course.
Will features expand? Probably.
Will there be adjustments? Definitely.

However, the essence is to make the online classifieds experience as easy as possible so that individuals can concentrate on what they are actually attempting to accomplish "buy, sell, hire, grow."

And perhaps, perhaps, make it less of a task.

Because honestly? There should be no strategy meeting when it comes to selling a couch.

It should just work.
