Thrustworks Dynetics test-fires India's first resonance-based rocket ignition system

Pune-based space-tech startup Thrustworks Dynetics has successfully test-fired India's first Resonance Ignition System for liquid rocket engines - a breakthrough typically associated with large, heavily funded global propulsion programs.
Founded in 2023 and incubated at SINE - IIT Bombay, the company achieved this milestone with ₹7 crore in seed funding, underscoring the rise of capital-efficient deep-tech innovation in India's growing private space ecosystem.
Resonance-based ignition is an advanced method of starting rocket engines. Unlike conventional systems that rely on high-voltage spark plugs or single-use igniters, this approach uses precisely engineered combustion chamber geometry to generate controlled acoustic shockwaves that initiate ignition. The result is a lighter, restartable ignition architecture suited for modern propulsion systems.
Restart capability is critical for satellite orbit correction, reaction control systems (RCS), and extended-duration space missions. Beyond launch vehicles, such systems may also have relevance in rocket-assisted take-off (RATO) concepts and high-thrust aerospace platforms, including certain drone applications.
Globally, similar propulsion research programs have typically required national space agency backing, multi-million euro funding, and dedicated combustion laboratories over long development cycles. Thrustworks' validation demonstrates how Indian startups are beginning to execute complex hardware innovations at early-stage capital scale.
The ignition system has been integrated into the company's modular 3D-printed ANYA liquid rocket engine platform. Development involved in-house combustion modelling software, precision additive manufacturing, and instrumented hot-fire testing.
"Resonance Ignitor is a geometry-based system design analyzed using our in-house software, enabling a wide range of propellants to be converted into hypergolic combinations," said Kalyani Shinde, CTO. "Where precision manufacturing meets controlled fire," added Vinith Shenoy, COO.
Thrustworks Dynetics collaborates with ecosystem stakeholders including ISRO, IN-SPACe, Bharat Forge, Godrej Aerospace, and INOXCVA. The company is advancing toward higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) through continued hot-fire validation and integrated engine testing.
The milestone reflects the increasing capability of Indian startups to build advanced aerospace hardware domestically, strengthening India's long-term propulsion and space technology ecosystem.
