India's First Resonance-Based Rocket Ignition System Successfully Tested by Thrustworks Dynetics
PUNE, INDIA - Thrustworks Dynetics has successfully test-fired India's first Resonance-Based Rocket Ignition System, marking a significant milestone in indigenous propulsion technology development. With this validation, India joins a limited group of global propulsion programs that have explored and demonstrated resonance-based ignition architectures for liquid rocket engines.Traditional liquid rocket engines typically rely on high-voltage spark systems or single-use pyrotechnic igniters to initiate combustion. In contrast, the resonance-based ignition system uses precisely engineered combustion chamber geometry to generate controlled acoustic shockwaves that initiate ignition. This reduces reliance on heavy electrical ignition hardware and enables multiple restart cycles under controlled test conditions.
Restartable ignition systems are critical for satellite orbit correction, reaction control systems (RCS), and extended-duration propulsion missions. Beyond launch vehicles, such ignition architectures may have applications in rocket-assisted take-off (RATO) systems, high-thrust drone propulsion modules, and advanced aerospace platforms requiring reliable ignition cycles.
Globally, resonance-based propulsion research programs have often required national space agency support, dedicated combustion laboratories, and multi-million euro institutional funding. Thrustworks achieved this validation with ₹7 crore in seed funding, demonstrating capital-efficient deep-tech engineering in a hardware-intensive domain.
Incubated at SINE - IIT Bombay, the company integrated the ignition system into its modular 3D-printed ANYA liquid rocket engine platform. Development included in-house combustion modelling software, precision additive manufacturing, acoustic stability analysis, and instrumented hot-fire testing.
"Resonance Ignitor is a geometry-based system design analyzed using our in-house software, enabling a wide range of propellants to be converted into hypergolic combinations," said Kalyani Shinde, CTO, Thrustworks Dynetics. "Where precision manufacturing meets controlled fire," added Vinith Shenoy, COO.
Founded in 2023, Thrustworks Dynetics collaborates with ISRO, IN-SPACe, Bharat Forge, Godrej Aerospace, and INOXCVA. The company is advancing toward higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) through continued hot-fire validation and integrated engine testing.
This milestone strengthens India's indigenous propulsion ecosystem and reflects the growing capability of capital-efficient deep-tech innovation within the country's expanding private space sector.
