PMS - when the body falls out of sync before your period

For many women, the days leading up to their period are more than just mildly uncomfortable. PMS - premenstrual syndrome - often comes with a whole wave of symptoms, both physical and emotional. Common complaints include breast and abdominal tenderness, headaches or back pain, muscle or joint discomfort, water retention, skin problems, sleep disturbances, or food cravings. Digestion can also be unsettled.

And then there are the inner upheavals: fatigue, irritability, mood swings, insecurity, or the feeling of simply not being yourself. Concentration may decline, and small things suddenly feel like major challenges. The causes of PMS are complex and are partly linked to hormonal changes throughout the monthly cycle. A balanced diet and an adequate supply of certain nutrients can play a supportive role during this phase.

Vitamins - the role of B vitamins in particular

Vitamins perform numerous functions in metabolism and contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system, psychological well-being, and energy metabolism-areas that many women perceive as particularly sensitive in connection with PMS. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is especially noteworthy. It contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and supports normal psychological function as well as the normal functioning of the nervous system. In addition, vitamin B6 helps reduce tiredness and fatigue, which can be particularly beneficial during the premenstrual phase.

Other B vitamins, such as vitamin B12 and folate (folic acid), also contribute to normal psychological function and energy metabolism. They likewise help reduce fatigue and exhaustion. An adequate intake of B vitamins can therefore help support the body during periods of increased physical and emotional demand.

Minerals and trace elements - support for energy, nerves, and muscles

In addition to vitamins, minerals and trace elements play an important role in overall well-being throughout the monthly cycle. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and to the transport of oxygen in the body. It also helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. Due to monthly blood loss, women generally have an increased iron requirement, making sufficient intake particularly important.

Zinc supports a wide range of bodily functions. It contributes to normal cognitive function and to normal macronutrient metabolism, and it plays a role in protecting cells from oxidative stress.

Magnesium is also frequently mentioned in connection with the cycle. It contributes to normal muscle function, normal functioning of the nervous system, and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. Calcium may also have a supportive effect, as it contributes to normal signal transmission between nerve cells.

Plant extracts - traditional allies for PMS

Plant extracts have long been used for their soothing effects in the management of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as chasteberry, has a long tradition in the treatment of hormonal imbalances, particularly in the context of PMS. The fruits of the chaste tree are used in powdered form, as tinctures, or as dry extracts. As early as the 1990s, clinical studies demonstrated the effectiveness of chaste tree in relieving PMS symptoms. Further research shows that it can also be helpful in reducing cycle-related breast pain and tenderness. At doses significantly lower than those used in medicinal products, chaste tree is also included in dietary supplements, where it may contribute to overall well-being before and during the period.

Turmeric has established itself as one of the most versatile medicinal plants, valued not only in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine but increasingly recognized in Western medicine as well. Its main active compound, curcumin, offers numerous health benefits. These include anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and antioxidant effects, as well as support for digestion and the immune system.

Lady's mantle is a widely used plant, particularly in the treatment of hormone-related complaints in women. It is known for its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and hormone-regulating properties. Traditionally, lady's mantle has been used to support women experiencing PMS, cycle-related discomfort, and menopausal symptoms.

Ginkgo biloba is one of the oldest and best-known medicinal plants and is especially appreciated in the Western world for its positive effects on cognitive health and cerebral circulation. In addition to its impact on cognitive function, Ginkgo biloba has also been shown to have beneficial effects on PMS symptoms. Numerous studies indicate that Ginkgo biloba extract can help alleviate psychological symptoms associated with PMS, such as irritability, mood swings, and depressive feelings.

Tryptophan - support for mood and well-being

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the body cannot produce on its own and must therefore be obtained through the diet. It serves as a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter commonly associated with mood, emotional balance, and overall well-being. Vitamin B6 is involved in the normal metabolism of amino acids and thereby supports the body's ability to utilize tryptophan effectively. As many women report mood swings or reduced emotional well-being in connection with PMS, ensuring an adequate dietary intake of tryptophan is considered beneficial.
