Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal's tourism-linked industries entered 2026 on firmer ground after another year of rising air traffic, with the United Kingdom retaining its position as the country's most important international market. New figures published on Tuesday (13) by Statistics Portugal (INE) show that passenger movements between the UK and Portugal increased steadily throughout 2025, reinforcing tourism's role as a structural driver of the Portuguese economy.

In total numbers, between January and November 2025, Portuguese airports handled more than 68 million passengers, with Lisbon Airport alone seeing 48.6% of this traffic. UK travelers remained the largest group, accounting for the greatest volume of both inbound and outbound international flights. Passenger arrivals from the UK rose by 2.3% over the period, while departures increased by 2.2%, confirming the appeal of the destination.

The data reinforces a broader pattern observed across Portugal's investment landscape. Tourism flows continue to support hotel performance, short-term rental demand, and associated residential markets, particularly in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve but increasingly beyond the traditional hotspots as well. According to INE, international traffic represented more than 80% of all passengers in November alone, with Europe, led by the UK, remaining the dominant source.

For investors active across hospitality and residential assets, this sustained momentum is not incidental. According to David Poston, a British citizen and CEO of the Harland & Poston Group, the UK has always been central to Portugal's tourism economy. The Group, headquartered in Lisbon, operates across Portuguese hospitality, developments, and real estate investments, advising international clients on the local market.

"When travel volumes remain elevated across multiple years as we can see, they start to reshape how cities grow, where capital is deployed, and which regions mature fastest. Following this tendency, we can observe how the Portuguese economy is doing in the past decade, showing amazing results.", confirmed David.

Recent aviation data also suggests that this passenger flow has spread across the country. While Lisbon airport still handled nearly half of all passengers in 2025, Porto and Faro both recorded faster growth rates, pointing to a widening footprint of tourism-led economic activity beyond the capital. For instance, Faro Airport, located in the Algarve, saw an increase of 5.8% when compared with last year, totaling 10 million passengers in 2025.
