Rhetoric coach Jessica Wahl: High intelligence is a strength that can also be challenging

Rhetoric coach Jessica Wahl: High intelligence is a strength that can also be challenging

Do you sometimes feel "too smart for the room" -- or do you know someone whose thoughts move faster than everyone else's?
High intelligence opens doors: to creative solutions, complex problem-solving, and exceptional achievements. At the same time, it can lead to misunderstandings, frustration, or social distance in everyday life.

Research and practice show: a high IQ alone does not guarantee smooth communication. Misunderstandings often arise not from a lack of intent, but from differences in thinking and expression patterns.

High intelligence -- a strength that can also be challenging!

Highly intelligent people frequently experience that their way of thinking is difficult for others to follow. Complex thought processes, rapid associations, or abstract reasoning often make it hard for others to keep up -- and can leave both sides feeling frustrated.

Konrad S., an engineer with an IQ over 130, reports:
"In meetings, I often feel like I'm speaking a different language than my colleagues. Sometimes I wonder, 'Did I really explain myself unclearly?'"

His experience shows that misunderstandings do not arise from a lack of empathy, but from structural differences in thinking styles.

What research says

A study published in the journal *Intelligence* examined individuals in the 99th IQ percentile. The result: highly intelligent people are less often perceived as attractive partners. About 40% of these lower ratings were associated with perceived social difficulties (Gignac & Callis, 2016).

Prof. Dr. Markus Winterfeld explains:
"Cognitive intelligence and social intelligence are two different things. Just because someone has a high IQ does not automatically mean they intuitively understand how others feel or think. Especially for very smart individuals, communication problems can occur because people think differently."

In other words: being highly intelligent does not mean being socially incompetent. However, one's way of thinking can appear demanding or difficult for others to follow.

Communication as the key

Jessica Wahl, an experienced rhetoric and communication coach, works daily with scientists and professionals who need to convey complex information. She knows firsthand how easily valuable knowledge can be misunderstood. Wahl emphasizes:

"Complexity is valuable--but complexity alone is not enough. Anyone who wants to be understood must learn to adapt their knowledge clearly and purposefully to their audience. Only then does genuine connection occur instead of misunderstanding."

Based on her years of experience, Wahl offers the following practical tips:

For highly gifted individuals: To be understood, benefit from adapting your messages to others' perspectives.

- Take small steps and use clear examples instead of only abstract concepts
- Create shared frames of reference
- Practice active listening to gather feedback

For colleagues, managers, or family members:

- Ask patiently when thoughts seem complex
- Allow space for detail without causing overwhelm
- Provide feedback to ensure communication remains clear

Conclusion:

High intelligence remains a key factor for success--professionally, creatively, and personally.
However, research and practice show: exceptional cognitive abilities do not guarantee seamless communication. Differences in thinking and expression patterns can lead to misunderstandings.

The solution: Empathy, audience-oriented communication, and mutual understanding. Those who develop these skills can fully leverage the advantages of high intelligence while avoiding conflicts and barriers.

For highly gifted individuals, this means: use your strength consciously and communicate clearly.
For those around them: facilitate collaboration with openness and patience, and tap into valuable potential.

Humanity in the age of AI: Vulnerability instead of perfect language
Berlin - Voice, style, facial expressions, arguments: What was long considered the unmistakable expression of human individuality can now be reproduced technically. Artificial intelligence writes speeches, imitates emotions, simulates closeness. What remains when everything that defines a human being appears interchangeable? The question is not a technological one, but an anthropological one. It does not focus on the performance of machines, but on the self-image of a society that is

Are you replaceable? - Why humans must not stop working on themselves despite AI
In a rapidly changing world in which artificial intelligence (AI) is taking over more and more tasks, a central question arises: what remains for humans? "Machines are faster, more precise and more efficient in many areas. But they are not human. They have no soul. They don't feel," says performance coach Jessica Wahl. At a time when technology is transforming the world of work, it's not about fighting machines, but about

Managers don't stand out these days. And that is precisely the problem. In video conferences, they sit quietly, nod in the right places, talk about transformation, resilience and speed. The slides are clear, the language standardized. They know the terms, they know the models. Everyone has read the same books. They all know how things should actually be.
