A High Frequency Jet Ventilator (HFNV) is a specialized respiratory support device that employs high-frequency, low-pressure, and low-tidal-volume ventilation. It delivers gas directly to the patient's airway in pulses at a high frequency of tens to hundreds of times per minute through a thin jet cannula. This ventilation method utilizes the turbulence and convection mechanisms generated by the high-speed airflow to promote uniform gas distribution and effective exchange within the lungs, even under extremely low tidal-volume conditions, while maintaining low alveolar pressure and an open airway. This ventilation method allows patients to retain spontaneous breathing while on mechanical ventilation, with minimal impact on hemodynamics. It is particularly suitable for assisting with open airway procedures such as laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy, and can also be used in complex clinical situations such as acute respiratory failure, bronchopleural fistula, and some neonatal respiratory distress syndromes that are difficult to manage with conventional mechanical ventilation.
