Geek out at Geek Planet

Geek out at Geek Planet

Get ready, Glasgow! A brand-new community-led, not-for-profit geek-culture-store, community cinema and creative space dedicated to nostalgia and pop-culture memories is opening its doors this Thursday in Springburn. Geek Planet, located at Unit 29, Springburn Shopping Centre, will officially open just in time for Halloween - bringing with it a jam-packed weekend of family fun and spooky surprises.

Founded by three friends from North Glasgow, community streamer Martin Griffith, broadcaster/presenter Emma Newlands and film-maker Frank McGowan, Geek Planet CIC is more than a place to pick up cool action figures and Pokémon cards - it's a new creative hub for North Glasgow, combining retail, podcast, film, cinema, heritage and community all under one roof, with projects delivered in partnership with the likes of North Glasgow Creative, Carnival Arts Yard and the North Glasgow Advice Service to combat loneliness, isolation, poverty and poor mental health through gaming, family, local connections and play. The venue - which has been transformed from the old Santander bank in the middle of the shopping centre boats a podcast suite, TV recording studio, heritage museum and radio station - along with vintage toys, games, comic books and collectibles, with a dedicated retro gaming area, VHS rental space, and other pop-culture treasures, with all profits reinvested into local community projects.

Grand Opening and Meet the Managers Event - 5.15pm, Thursday 30th October from 5.15pm:

Join us for a cutting of the ribbon and an exclusive first look at the Geek Planet community hub space before the official Halloween celebrations begin!

Meet the founders, explore the shop and community cinema, and enjoy light refreshments and an exhibition of classic toys from the 80s and 90s, including Ghostbusters and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Beetlejuice Halloween Party - Friday 31st October from 3pm - 7pm:

Springburn's spookiest party comes to life on Halloween Night with a Beetlejuice-themed celebration inside Geek Planet. Expect prizes, spooky games, and family-friendly frights on the big screen - followed by a special screening of Beetlejuice and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Entry is free (fancy dress is encouraged!) and goody bags will be available for the first 30 guests. A special arts and crafts workshop - including paper mask-making and wand-building is hosted by local artist Bex, along with story-telling about the spooky history of Halloween traditions in Scotland.

Halloween Geekend Cartoon Festival - Saturday & Sunday 1st and 2nd Nov:

A marathon of classics old and new will be on the big screen over two days!

A Word from the Founders:

"Geek Planet is a new safe and inclusive space for Springburn where people of all ages can connect, come together and celebrate what they love, no matter what they like to geek out about," said co-founder of Geek Planet CIC Frank McGowan. "We're all about positive experiences and alternative pathways to career and employment, and encouraging hobbies and including everyone - including those who are disabled and neurodivergent."

"The response has been just incredible," added co-founder Martin Griffith, "especially from older residents in the community who are excited to revisit toys and TV shows from their childhood. There's truly nothing like us in Glasgow, as we bring together retail and community for a new business model that is set to transform the high street and our community."

Emma Newlands, who is in charge of community engagement at Geek Planet, said: "It's so heartwarming to know Springburn has welcomed us already before our doors are already open. We've got so many wonderful people to thank for helping us get set up and we can't wait to show you what we have in store for you over the coming months as well to bring the community together in new ways."
