Support wanted for the abolition of animal suffering

?DP petition reaches milestone, but still needs animal-loving helpers who are willing to strengthen a petition

(W?rzburg) - Two thirds are (almost) done: the Ecological Democratic Party (?DP - Die Naturschutzpartei) wants to collect 30,000 signatures for better animal protection in slaughterhouses with a petition. There are now a good 20,000. "With the continued help of animal-loving people who want to spare cows and pigs unspeakable suffering, we can do it," says Prof. Dr. Herbert Einsiedler from the party's federal executive committee optimistically, hoping for more supporters of the petition. The aim is to force a change in animal welfare in the Bundestag: "The conditions in slaughterhouses are brutal and cruel time and time again, and this must not be allowed to continue," says Einsiedler.

The background to this is a case before a court in Vechta, Lower Saxony. The court sentenced animal rights activists who had broken into a slaughterhouse there and documented evidence on video. It was not the actual perpetrators who were brought before the court, but the people who accused the animal suffering. A scandal for the ?DP. It wants to change this by having official cameras monitor all work in all slaughterhouses in future. The party is hoping that many people will join the collection of signatures and get the ball rolling to finally bring about a legal improvement for the maltreated animals at the end of the campaign. "We are still hoping for many people to discover their hearts for the animals and finally help put an end to their suffering," says Helmut Kauer, one of the initiators on the ?DP Federal Executive Committee.
