2015 Ayler Riesling Kabinett dry, Official Wine of the 2017 Berlinale

Hollywood celebrities and stars from around the world will celebrate the 67th Berlin International Film Festival Berlinale with Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier’s 2015 Ayler Riesling Kabinett dry

Trier, 25 January, 2017 – From February 9 to the 19, 2017 Berlin will once again roll out the red carpet for Hollywood: the 67th Berlin International Film Festival – Berlinale – will bring stars from around the world to Potsdamer Platz. The German Wine Institute (DWI), an Official Supplier of the Berlinale, has announced that all of the wines served at the galas, receptions and in the lounges at the Berlinale will be sourced exclusively from German vineyards. Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier is pleased to report that for the second time, following up on 2013, one of its wines will be among the official Berlinale selection of 22 wines: the 2015 Ayler Riesling Kabinett dry.

Located in Trier, Germany’s oldest city, the estate holds some 130 hectares of vineyards in prime locations along the scenic Mosel, Saar and Ruwer rivers, with 90 percent planted with the finest Riesling grapes. Ayler Riesling is an Ortswein or “village wine”, a term for a wine that is produced in a traditional wine-growing village and has its own distinctive style. The village of Ayl is nestled between the Ayler Kupp, a steep, mostly south-facing slope, and the Saar River. This picturesque winemaking village in the Trier-Saarburg district is known for fruit-driven, racy Rieslings of an unmistakable character.

The 2015 Ayler Riesling Kabinett dry is characterized by a remarkable vibrancy and rich extracts. Like all of the Kabinett wines from Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier, it is very fine, light and elegant and has a moderate alcohol content (alcohol: 11.5%; residual sugar: 8 g/l; total acidity: 7.9 g/l). The grapes grow in the best plots of the Kupp and Herrenberger sites and are meticulously selected for harvest. Vinification takes place in the traditional 1000-liter oak casks used in the Mosel region or in stainless steel tanks, and the wines are left on the lees until March or April of the year following the harvest. The fermentation process is expertly monitored with tastings, and only after careful consideration and approval from the cellar master is the wine bottled and sealed with a natural cork.

Dr. Karsten Weyand, CEO of Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier, was delighted that decision makers at the Berlinale have chosen a Riesling from Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier once more: “German Riesling continues to triumph around the world. Our 2015 Ayler Riesling Kabinett dry is very distinctive, has an almost ethereal character and conjures up a unique tension between richness, minerality and concentrated spice in the glass. We are very excited that this surprising Riesling will now be able to show the guests at the Berlinale what it’s made of.”

The characteristic diversity of the Ortsweine produced along the Mosel, the Saar and the Ruwer is a product of the microclimates of the river valleys, the composition of the slate soil and the vineyards’ degree of incline and exposure to the sun. Thanks to a unique combination of these features, each German wine-growing village can create a highly individual and inimitable style of wine, an ability that is prized by wine connoisseurs the world over and the reason why German Riesling enjoys such international prestige.

The Berlinale selection includes nine different white wines, nine reds and four Winzersekte or grower’s sparkling wines. They were chosen in December 2016 through blind tasting by a panel that included the reigning German Wine Queen, Lena Endesfelder, as well as renowned wine experts Gunnar Tietz and Arno Steguweit. Festival director Dieter Kosslick praised the long-standing collaboration with the German Wine Institute, calling the exceptional selection of German wines an important sign of quality for the Berlin International Film Festival.

Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier holds approximately 130 hectares of vineyards. The estate was founded in 1966 by uniting three prominent, centuries-old wine estates and former founding members of the regional chapter of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates, the VDP Mosel (Großer Ring): the Bischöfliche Konvikt, the Bischöfliche Priesterseminar and the Hohe Domkirche. In 2004, Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier acquired the 30-hectare former Stiftungsweingut Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium. Both estates have holdings in prime sites along the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer rivers. The focus lies squarely on Riesling, which accounts for 90% of vineyard plantings. The grapes are pressed at Scharzhof on the Saar and at Duisburger Hof on the Ruwer. The wines are matured in the heart of Trier in the estate’s extensive vaulted cellars, which date back to Roman times. More information may be found at www.bischoeflicheweingueter.de/en
