Some of the key facts of the Postoperative ileus Market Report:
The global market for Postoperative Ileus (POI) treatment is projected to experience steady growth over the forecast period from 2024 to 2034, driven by a consistent compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The increasing prevalence of POI is closely tied to the rising number of surgical procedures, especially abdominal surgeries. Contributing factors include an aging global population, a higher incidence of chronic diseases that require surgical treatment, and advancements in surgical techniques that have led to more complex procedures.
While only a few pharmaceutical companies are currently addressing the challenges associated with POI, some treatments are already in use. These include **Entereg (alvimopan)** by **Merck & Co.** and **RELISTOR (methylnaltrexone)** by **Valeant Pharmaceuticals**. Additionally, new therapies are emerging in clinical development, such as **LB1148** from **Palisade Bio** and **ORE001** from **Orexa BV**, both of which have shown encouraging results in enhancing recovery after surgery. These novel treatments hold promise for improving patient recovery, lowering healthcare expenses, and raising the overall quality of postoperative care.
Analysis shows that around **22 million inpatient surgeries** are performed annually in the U.S., with about **2.7 million cases** resulting in **Postoperative Ileus (POI)** lasting several days.
A review of over 800,000 U.S. surgical cases using ICD-9 codes found a **4.3% overall rate** of ileus. POI was seen in **15-20% of abdominal surgeries**, **6-10% of colon surgeries**, and **10% of cardiac or orthopedic procedures**. In a study of 38,068 patients, the **overall POI incidence was 10.3%**, with rates of **20.6% (open) vs. 14.6% (laparoscopic) colectomy**, and **11.6% (open) vs. 3.2% (laparoscopic) cholecystectomy**.
Key Postoperative ileus companies such as Palisade Bio, Merck, and others are evaluating new drugs for Postoperative ileus to improve the treatment landscape.
Promising Postoperative ileus therapies includeLB1148, ENTEREG (alvimopan), and others.
Postoperative ileus Overview
Postoperative Ileus (POI) is a condition characterized by reduced or impaired gastrointestinal (GI) motility following abdominal or non-abdominal surgery. GI motility involves the coordinated movement of food through the digestive tract-from the mouth, down the throat and esophagus, through the stomach and intestines, and ultimately out of the body.
A diagnosis of POI is typically made when two or more of the following symptoms persist without improvement by the fourth day after surgery: (a) nausea and vomiting, (b) inability to consume food orally for at least 24 hours, (c) lack of gas passage for 24 hours, (d) abdominal bloating or distension, and (e) imaging findings indicating ileus.
POI is a significant concern for surgeons, as it can lead to longer hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and higher rates of postoperative complications. Risk factors commonly associated with POI include being male, older age, and experiencing substantial blood loss during surgery. Although advances in understanding the underlying mechanisms of POI have led to improved prevention and treatment strategies, it still affects approximately 10-30% of patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
Postoperative ileus Market Outlook
The Postoperative Ileus (POI) treatment market is projected to grow steadily over the next decade, driven by the rising volume of surgical procedures, particularly abdominal surgeries, and the growing need for effective postoperative recovery solutions. As healthcare systems aim to reduce hospital stays, minimize complications, and improve patient outcomes, the demand for advanced POI therapies is expected to increase significantly.

Prevention and management of postoperative endophthalmitis
The decisive criterion of postoperative endophthalmitis after cataract operations or intravitreal injections is the contamination of the operating area and the instruments / implants with pathogens during the surgical procedure. In traditional operating theaters, the "sterility" is very limited and only given directly under the supply air ceiling. However, the surgical field is almost completely shielded from the ultra-clean air by the surgical microscope and the surgeon's head, so that…
