The countdown is on: In less than two months, accessibility will become mandatory for associations
Mainaschaff, May 5, 2025_ - In less than two months, the moment of truth will strike for Germany's associations: from June 28, 2025, the German Accessibility Reinforcement Act (BFSG) will require all consumer-related digital services to be accessible - from member portals to online registration forms. Anyone who misses the deadline risks fines of up to 100,000 euros, warnings and, in the worst case, even having their website shut down. But behind the legal pressure lies a huge opportunity. An accessible website not only reaches the approximately ten percent of the population who are absolutely dependent on accessible offers, but also improves the experience for all users, the search engine ranking and the image of the association.
Wake up, associations!
Until now, accessibility has mainly applied to public authorities. Now registered clubs and associations are also affected: "As soon as an association concludes services digitally - such as collecting membership fees, issuing donation receipts or selling tickets for events - the BFSG requirements apply," explains Stefan Strassburg, co-founder of the _Aktion Barrierefrei_ initiative. "Anyone who doesn't react until 2025 is running behind while the market supervisory authority is already checking." aktion-barrierefrei.org
The authorities may carry out random checks after the deadline. If a web form cannot be operated using a keyboard, subtitles are missing in videos or the font cannot be enlarged, the website is deemed to be inaccessible - and violations will be punished. aktion-barrierefrei.org
Double benefit: Mandatory and optional
The BFSG transposes the European Accessibility Act into German law. The technical benchmark is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which require alternative texts, sufficient contrast and clear navigation structures, among other things. What sounds like extra work makes websites measurably better: mobile users are happy about lean code, search engines reward semantic headings and sponsors are increasingly paying attention to digital inclusion in ESG reports.
Five to-dos until the deadline
As-is analysis - quick test of the current website to identify critical hurdles.
Set priorities - pages and forms related to the contract first.
Modernize technology - CMS updates, contrast check, keyboard navigation.
Sharpen content - easy language, subtitles, alternative texts.
Establish monitoring - Automated checks keep the site accessible after the relaunch.
Associations are multipliers
As representatives of the interests of millions of people, associations have enormous multiplier power: those who remove barriers here send a signal far beyond their own organization. In sports clubs, care associations, professional societies and aid organizations, inclusion becomes tangible - and trust is strengthened.
Support at the touch of a button
Aktion Barrierefrei supports associations with a free accessibility audit, automated monitoring and the DirectFix service, which displays and fixes WCAG errors in real time. "We want to enable volunteers to concentrate on their content work again instead of despairing over HTML code," emphasizes Strassburg.
Act now!
The countdown is on. Postponed accessibility will become a cost trap by 2025 at the latest - or a turbo if it is tackled in time.
