THOUGHT SHOWER: Becoming visible - instead of being represented

I have never met her.
And yet she is there.

In my line.
In my gaze.
In the decision,
to leave something out -
to show something.

Catharine Rembert.

She did not teach
how to design beautifully.
She asked:

Why?

Why this line?
Why this room?
Why exactly like this -
and not otherwise?

For her, design was not an ornament.
It was attitude.
Clarity.

And today?

It is my origin.
My mental grounding.
My benchmark for stillness.

When I work -
whether with paper, space,
with voice or body -
then there is
always something of her.

The emptiness,
that carries something.
The shadow,
that speaks.
The repetition,
that changes the view.

I do not continue,
I translate.

I do not copy,
I listen.

And then:
I set my own line.
My own.
In their echo.

I create spaces,
that don't want to be understood immediately.

Spaces,
that pose a question - but
but do not demand an answer.

I design,
so that something becomes audible,
what otherwise
remains overlooked.

I choose forms,
that do not impose themselves.
I allow
that something remains open.

Because not everything has to be one.
Some things can be fragmentary.
Disordered.
In transition.

I believe in design
as an act of attention.

Not as an assertion -
but as listening.

I don't see Rembert as a method.
I see it as an attitude.

A quiet foundation,
on which I build something new.

Not,
to show
what I can do.

But rather
to make visible,
what wants to be seen.

For me, design does not begin
not with tools.
But with a pause.

A breath.
A listening.
A yes.

A no.
One line.

Mine.
And yet carried
by one,
who was there -

long before me.
And remains within me.

And then -
then it was there.
The room.

For the 120th year.

A room made of line,
emptiness
and light.
