How to Get a 5-Year Multiple-Entry Schengen Visa
The ability to move freely around most of Europe without the need to continuously reapply for a visa is a dream for many globetrotters. This is right where the five-year, multiple-entry Schengen visa comes in. It makes this dream come true for eligible travelers and provides an unprecedented travel convenience for frequent European visitors. While this long-term visa is not easy to get, knowing what is accepted by the authorities can go a long way toward approval.Spanning 29 countries from France and Germany to Greece and Spain the Schengen area is an ideal destination for tourists, businesspeople, students and families. A Schengen zone multiple-entry visa valid for five years permits travelers to enter the zones on multiple occasions for up to 90 days within any given 180-day period with no need to pass through repeated application processes.
Who Can Obtain a 5-Year Multiple-Entry Visa?
The five-year multiple-entry visa sounds great in theory, but it is usually given to travelers who fit certain criteria based on their history of travel and future situations. Embassies prefer, in applicants, a record of responsible traveling, and particularly a previous two-year multiple-entry Schengen visa in the last three years.
Those who travel a lot for work, who have family ties or who have had a history of returning home after visiting Europe are common things that authorities look for, according to experts. The applicants also have to provide sufficient evidence of strong economic and social ties in their home countries to convince the authorities that they will return home after the expiry of the visa.
How to Apply for a Five-Year Schengen Visa
The application procedure for a five-year visa is similar to the common Schengen visa process, with a couple of important nuances.
First of all (the basic) applicants should choose the option "multiple-entry" while filling the visa application form.
The cover letter is an important part of the application. This entry must clarify their need for access to Schengen territory repeatedly over a few years. The cover letter should also explain past travel experiences and how particular future plans require multiple entries.
Documents like business invitations, evidence of family ties or similar help verify the application.
Applicants are also required to submit a travel itinerary even if it is only a preliminary plan and proof of travel insurance.
A policy covering the entirety of the requested five-year period is not required; however, applicants must certify that suitable coverage will be obtained for the planned trips and that insurance will be in force for each trip.
As with any application, financial documentation is another cornerstone. All applicants must show that they have enough funds to cover their stay, along with proof of job, property ownership or other economic commitments in the country of origin.
Cost of the 5-Year Schengen Visa
Fee for a five-year multiple-entry Schengen visa as of 2025 is €90 for adults and €45 for children from six to twelve. They should also expect to pay additional costs at visa service centers, like courier fees and travel insurance.
