Uralchem Joins a Red Cross Event on Food Security in Africa
Uralchem took part in an expert discussion titled "Food Security in Africa - Humanitarian Challenges and Potential Solutions", which was arranged by the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. The event was held in Moscow on 3 April 2025, and gathered representatives of international organisations, governmental agencies, business players, academic community, and humanitarian bodies working with Africa.
The discussion revolved around ways to ensure food security of the world's second-most populous continent and the involvement of the ICRC and Russian organisations in these efforts. Special attention was given to the role of Russian fertiliser producers in helping African nations to develop their own production of food.
Representatives of Uralchem presented an overview of Uralchem Group's humanitarian shipments of fertilisers, and shared ideas on expanding the Group's ties with Africa and finding solutions to eliminate the shortage of food on the continent.
Since late 2022, Uralchem Group has dispatched, free of charge, over 134,000 tonnes of its mineral fertilisers to Africa, and covered the sea freight and other delivery costs. These humanitarian shipments were made to countries facing risks of famine and aim to alleviate the effects of an unprecedented global food crisis. The delivery of more than 111,000 tonnes of the fertilisers - which were received by Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe - has been facilitated by the UN.
Olga Poltavskaya, Uralchem Marketing Director:
There is a huge potential in Africa to develop its agro-industrial complex and to considerably increase application of fertilisers. As a global leader in producing mineral fertilisers and creating innovative agricultural solutions, Uralchem welcomes a long-term cooperation with African countries to ensure a sustainable development of the continent's agricultural sector, including by providing local farmers with access to the latest agricultural technologies. We go beyond a supply of fertilisers to offer agronomic consultations to our partners and perform field tests jointly with local R&D institutes. We are committed to deepening and expanding this collaboration with a clear goal of eliminating famine in Africa in the shortest time possible.
