Press release from: The Burton Group

(Charlotte, North Carolina) – March 6, 2008 – A Sign Of The Times of the Carolinas (ASOTT) celebrates African – American women and their heritage during their 8th Annual Black History Concert. The concert entitled “The Quilt: Covering Mothers, Mommies and Mamas” event will take place Saturday, March 29th in the West Charlotte High School Auditorium (2219 Senior Drive) at 6:00 PM. The performance will highlight the beauty, love, pain, strength and wisdom of black women.

A Charlotte based non-profit organization, A Sign Of The Times has as its sole mission the provision of music education and performances that capture the spirit and preserves the legacy of African and African-American ancestry through music. Concert attendees will experience a musical journey that includes genres of mainstream jazz, blues and classic R&B performed by the A Sign Of The Times Big Band and featuring Gary Mumford and the Senior African Drum Ensemble. Poetry performed by local artists will serve as the thread that connects the segments of the program – much like the squares of a quilt.

A Sign Of The Times of the Carolinas has commissioned Master Quilter Barbara Hart to create a one of a kind quilt celebrating the life and legacy of women of color. Images of many of the world’s “sheroes” including Harriett Tubman, Madame C. J. Walker, Billie Holiday and Oprah Winfrey will be showcased on the quilt. Patrons will have the opportunity to immortalize an important woman in their lives on the quilt by purchasing a panel with their likeness on it.

“We are so excited about this concert”, says ASOTT vocalist, Toni Tupponce. “It is always important to us that each of our shows is better than the last. Tyrone (Jefferson, ASOTT Director) has written and arranged some of his best work for this show and we’re bringing the music back to the Historic West End of Charlotte!” Tupponce added.

A catered reception will follow the concert in the West Charlotte High School Cafeteria. Tickets for the event are on sale now for $20 general admission and $15 special rate for Senior Citizens (60+) or Youth (17 years or younger). Group discount rates are available.
