Last year of 2007 turned out to be crucial for Belarus. A list of all industrial enterprises entitled to become state-owned was worked out according to the assignment of President A. Lukashenko. Several measures were taken to improve the investment climate in Belarus.

Already in 2007 several large Belarusian enterprises acquired their new foreign owners. Among such were enterprises both state and private-owned. The shares of the "Motovello" joint stock company, the largest motorcycle producing enterprise within all CIS countries are bought by the Austrian firm "ATEC Holding Gmbh". Another Austrian telecommunications company "Telekom Austria Group" bought the shares of Belarusian cellular company "Velcom". Meanwhile the "Swatch" company got interested in the "Lutch" watches plant.

Apart from that a number of M&A transactions took place in the sphere of banking. In 2007 the "BTB" joint stock company acquired the block of shares of the "Slavneftebank» joint stock company. The Belarusian "Atombank" was bought by the Ukrainian "Deltabank" banking group. The "Home Credit" (The Netherlands) penetrated the Belarusian market by acquiring the "Lorobank" joint stock company. The end of the 2007 year came to be promising as President A. Lukashenko claimed that Belarus is about to enter the list of 25 most investment-attractive countries in the world.

However in spite of numerous achievements in the sphere of enterprise acquisition in the Republic of Belarus there were a lot of unsolved problems as far as the legislation, economy and business spheres are concerned. This important issue, which has been deprived proper attention is the main topic of the "Improvement of the investment processes in the Republic of Belarus: mergers and acquisitions" international conference which is due on the 27th of March 2008.

Moreover it will provide an opportunity of working out some particular suggestions of solving a number of crucial problems in this sphere to the Belarusian government. Among the organizing committee members are not only representatives of government bodies, international organizations, but also representatives of both domestic and foreign private businesses. The conference will cover legal, financial, tax, organizational, accounting, investment, insurance, as well as informational aspects of acquiring a business in Belarus. The participants will also share their expertise and successful achievements in the sphere of M&A transactions. The participants are the representatives of government control bodies of the Republic, the potentional buyers, investors, as well as the owners of the businesses willing to sell the companies, financial institutions (banks, leasing and insurance companies), business people from Belarus, CIS and EU, business unions and professional organizations representatives, international organizations and foreign embassies, investment, consulting, legal and auditing companies.

During the conference there will be conducted a special business forum on sale and purchase, transactions as well as investment, financing, crediting and leasing matters. There will be a presentation on the first ready business enterprises auction in the Republic of Belarus.
