Reimagining Spring Break: Black-Owned Brands Push for a Return to Historic Black Beach Communities
With Miami Beach actively discouraging spring break tourism through curfews, alcohol bans, and increased policing, Black-owned brands and cultural organizations are championing a new vision-one that reclaims historic Black beach communities as premier destinations for travelers seeking culture, history, and relaxation.During segregation, Black Americans created thriving coastal havens, many of which were later lost to gentrification and neglect. Now, brands like Black Girl Beach Day, Ebony Beach Club, and paperxpencil [PXP] are leading a movement to revitalize these spaces and position them as vibrant alternatives to traditional spring break hotspots.
A New Spring Break Experience
Rather than overcrowded, high-cost party scenes, travelers can embrace historic Black beaches such as:
American Beach, FL - A historic Black resort town founded in 1935.
Atlantic Beach, SC - Known as the "Black Pearl," rich in culture and history. Chicken Bone Beach, NJ - A vibrant Black beach community in Atlantic City, once a safe haven for Black vacationers during segregation.
Sag Harbor, NY - A historic Black enclave blending coastal beauty and heritage. Bruce's Beach, CA - Once a thriving Black-owned resort before being unjustly seized, now a symbol of resilience and restoration efforts.
Promoting these destinations supports Black-owned businesses, preserves cultural history, and creates a more inclusive travel experience.
Black Beach-Focused Brands Leading the Charge
Black Girl Beach Day @blackgirlbeachday organizes large-scale gatherings to celebrate Black women's presence in coastal spaces.
Ebony Beach Club @ebonybeachclub fosters Black surf culture and inclusive beach experiences.
paperxpencil [PXP] @pxpbrand tells the story of the Black beach experience through apparel, literature, and digital content.
As Miami Beach shifts away from traditional spring break tourism, now is the time to rethink travel. By supporting historic Black beach communities and the brands leading this movement, travelers can help preserve Black history, strengthen local economies, and redefine what spring break can be.
