Colombia Boosts Its Coffee to the World

In 2024, Colombian coffee exports reached 12.1 million bags, marking a 14.6% growth compared to the previous year.

Madrid, February 20, 2025 - During the recent Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Colombia strengthened its position as a global benchmark in specialty coffee production. With more than 9,500 cups of coffee and Colombian-origin cocoa bars served to over 3,000 world leaders, business executives, and event participants, the country showcased the excellence and quality of its products to a high-level international audience. Moreover, it was the only nation with such a presence at the WEF Annual Meeting in Davos.

The presence of this flagship product at one of the world's most important economic gatherings reinforces Colombia's commitment to the internationalization of its coffee and the pursuit of new export opportunities. Coffee, which accounts for 9.9% of the agricultural added value and 0.9% of the national GDP, stands as a fundamental pillar for the country's economic and social development.

This achievement is the result of a joint effort by the Colombian government, which has implemented strategic programs to strengthen the sector's internationalization, increase productivity, and promote high-quality coffee in global markets. Thanks to the coordinated work between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) and ProColombia, the coffee showcased in Davos came from producer communities in the southwest of the country-regions that are part of the quality programs established in the Coffee Agreement led by MADR. These coffees were selected for their exceptional cup profiles, reflecting Colombia's dedicated work and rich coffee-growing tradition.
Colombia's participation in this global forum not only highlights the quality and diversity of its coffee but also opens doors to strengthening the country's image as a reliable and competitive supplier in the international market. This, in turn, fosters sustainable development in coffee-growing communities and contributes to national economic growth.

Among the key initiatives led by the Ministry are the Rural Capitalization Incentive (ICR), which has enabled coffee plantation renewal through subsidies of up to 40% of credit for small-scale coffee growers, with investments exceeding $293.282 billion COP (US$71 million). Likewise, the FAIA Coffee Program has provided subsidies of more than $58.7 billion COP (US$14 million) for the purchase of agricultural inputs, while Special Credit Lines have benefited over 30,761 producers with subsidized interest rates.

"Colombian coffee, in addition to being an emblem of our national identity, is a testament to how tradition, sustainability, and innovation can open new opportunities in global markets. Thanks to joint efforts with the Ministry of Agriculture and coffee growers, we continue bringing to the world a coffee that delights the senses while driving rural development and the country's competitiveness," says Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia.
According to Caballero, citing figures from DANE (National Administrative Department of Statistics), in 2024, Colombian coffee exports reached 12.1 million bags, reflecting a 14.6% growth compared to the previous year. The main export destinations include the United States, Germany, Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Spain. Additionally, exports to Canada have significantly increased, now accounting for 7.5% of total exports, with 34.9% growth in the past year. Colombia has also strengthened its presence in coffee-producing countries such as Mexico and Ecuador, expanding its global reach.
Colombia has positioned itself in the industrialized and specialty coffee segments, consolidating its reputation in quality and sustainability. At international auctions, Colombian coffees have reached record prices of up to US$126 per pound, reflecting the strong preference for their flavor and origin.
Colombian coffee is not only renowned for its taste and aroma but also for its sustainable production model. Through the National Agroecology Policy and climate change mitigation strategies, the coffee sector has adopted responsible practices such as agroforestry systems and the developmet of more resilient coffee varieties to combat pests and climate variability.

Additionally, coffee has played a crucial role in peacebuilding and social development in regions affected by armed conflict. Reintegration programs have provided former combatants and rural communities with the opportunity for economic stability and progress through coffee farming.

With a comprehensive strategy supporting coffee growers, fostering innovation, and promoting Colombian coffee in global markets, the country continues to win over consumers and strengthen its reputation as one of the world's best coffee producers. "At the Ministry of Agriculture and ProColombia, we continue working to expand the presence and enhance the competitiveness of our coffee, ensuring a sustainable future for thousands of producer families, regions, and the country," concludes Caballero.
