Spotlight on Hong Kong’s Fire Doors

Following several fire-related incidents in Hong Kong, the effectiveness of fire-resistant doors has come under greater scrutiny. Fire doors are one of the key defences against the spreading of fire and smoke and must comply with the necessary standards.

Hong Kong's Fire Services Department (FSD) stipulates that the construction and materials used for fire prevention must be tested in accordance with BS 476 and certified as being capable of resisting the action of fire for a specific period of time.

Fire doors are used as part of a passive fire protection system to reduce the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartments of a structure and to enable safe egress from a building or structure. They must be capable of resisting the spread of fire and smoke for a prescribed amount of time – the Fire Resistance Period (FRP).

During testing, fire doors are assessed purely on their integrity, with the load-bearing capacity and insulation criteria being non-applicable unless otherwise specified. Both sides of the door should be tested, except in the case of life doors, when only the landing side need be tested.
