Author Q&A

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book, Grandpa, My Hero, was inspired by my personal experience caring for my grandfather and my desire to address geriatric isolation. Before starting the book, I conducted extensive research, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups with geriatric experts, caregivers, and seniors. This process revealed a powerful truth: isolation for seniors isn't just about being physically alone-it's about feeling invisible in a world that often prioritizes youth and speed. Writing and illustrating this book allowed me to combine my love for storytelling with my commitment to shedding light on geriatric care that deeply resonates with me

How did you come up with the title?

The title Grandpa, My Hero came naturally as a reflection of my relationship with my grandfather and the profound impact he has had on my life. Caring for him and witnessing his strength and resilience in the face of challenges inspired me to see him as a true hero. I wanted the title to celebrate his role not just as my grandfather, but as a source of wisdom, courage, and love. The phrase also embodies the core message of the book: recognizing and honoring the often-overlooked contributions of seniors in our lives and society.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Absolutely. The core message of Grandpa, My Hero is the importance of valuing and connecting with seniors in our lives. I want readers to recognize that aging doesn't diminish a person's worth or contributions; rather, it enriches their stories and wisdom. The book also highlights the emotional impact of isolation, not just as physical loneliness but as a feeling of invisibility in a fast-paced world.

Through the story, I hope to inspire readers-especially children-to build stronger intergenerational relationships, showing empathy, respect, and care for older adults. Ultimately, the book aims to foster a sense of connection and remind readers that small acts of kindness and attention can make a big difference in someone's life.

How much of the book is realistic?

Grandpa, My Hero is based off a true story of my relationship with my grandfather. It is deeply rooted in realism, as it draws directly from my personal experiences caring for my grandfather and the stories shared by seniors, caregivers, and geriatric experts during my research. Every detail, from the emotions conveyed to the challenges highlighted, is inspired by real-life observations and conversations.

What are your current projects?

Currently, I am working on several exciting projects. One of my key focuses is expanding my advocacy for mental health and geriatric care through innovative solutions. For example, I'm developing a senior lifestyle app aimed at reducing social isolation among older adults by fostering community connections and providing engaging resources.

In addition, I'm exploring storytelling in new ways, including a second children's book inspired by the intergenerational bonds that strengthen families. I'm also collaborating with mental health organizations to raise awareness about the stigma surrounding mental health in Asian communities, incorporating art and technology to drive impact.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I've always found that writing allows me to convey my thoughts and emotions more effectively than speaking. It became my outlet to reflect, create, and connect with others. In addition, my current high school, Westridge has played a significant role in nurturing my passion. The school's dedication to teaching the tools of great writing has not only honed my skills but also deepened my appreciation for the craft. Through writing, I've discovered a powerful way to tell stories, share ideas, and make an impact.

Who designed the covers?

I illustrated the book and designed the cover myself. Art has always been a passion of mine, and it's something I turn to for both creative expression and stress relief. Designing the cover allowed me to combine my love for storytelling and art, creating a visual representation of the book's heartfelt message. It was incredibly fulfilling to bring the story to life not just through words, but also through imagery that captures its essence.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

Writing Grandpa, My Hero was a fun experience. Through my research, including interviews and focus groups, I gained a profound understanding of the challenges seniors face, especially the emotional impact of isolation. The process also strengthened my belief in the importance of intergenerational connections and how much we can learn from the experiences of older generations.

On a personal level, writing the book reinforced the value of persistence and self-reflection. Crafting a story that combined research with heartfelt emotion was challenging, but it deepened my appreciation for storytelling as a tool for advocacy and change. Most importantly, it reminded me how much joy and fulfillment come from creating something meaningful.

Picture this: You feel uninspired and you've sat at the computer for an hour without conquering any words. How do you get your creativity flowing?

When I feel uninspired and find myself staring at a blank screen, I turn to my go-to creativity boosters: a cup of matcha and some happy music. The aroma from the matcha helps me relax and reset, while music sets the mood and sparks my imagination.

What does being a successful author look like to you?

To me, being a successful author isn't just about book sales or recognition-it's about creating stories that resonate deeply with readers and seeing a review that my book has left a meaningful impact. It's about sparking conversations or providing comfort and connection through my book.
