New York, NY - Sculptor and metalwork artist Mini Mukherjee is unveiling "Joy Buddies," a bold new expansion of her award-winning sculpture series. Originally conceived in 2017 as a 150-pound metalwork sculpture made from copper, brass, and steel, "Joy Buddies" has now evolved into a larger body of work with a team of award-winning artists that explores themes of unity, connection, and resilience. This exciting new chapter will be launched with a billboard in Times Square showcasing the "Joy Buddies" artwork as the kickoff to its global debut.

"New York is where I spent the first several years of my career, and that time left a mark on my creative spirit in ways I wasn't aware of until much later when I began to make art. I would have to walk through Times Square every day on my way to Wall Street, and to now be back in New York as an artist with an amazing team feels like a big circle moment," says Mukherjee.

"Joy Buddies" began as a piece symbolizing strength, resilience, and the enduring human spirit during a time in the U.S. when political strife and cultural tension were beginning to take center stage in the media. The original sculpture, with its intent to show joy in an abstracted form as well as Mukherjee's signature fire-painted textures, won acclaim and has been exhibited in galleries and private collections globally, including in Los Angeles, Vienna, and Chicago. The evolution of "Joy Buddies" reflects an expanded vision, with new forms and collaborative works created alongside a team of talented artists, all sharing the goal of celebrating unity in a time of social and political division.The "Joy Buddies" characters are intentionally faceless and abstract to embody the universal feeling of a joyful connection between two beings. Becoming a mother during the pandemic sparked the idea of creating new work around the "Joy Buddies" that focused on the spectrum of joy, not just through buoyant times but also through resilience.

To do this, Mukherjee felt bringing a team of artists together would be a testament to the "Joy Buddies" message of unity to bring this deeper message of joy to life.. Now, in 2025, the work is set to expand into even more forms, continuing to drive the message of unity and the importance of finding points of connection despite our surface-level differences. "At the end of the day, my work is not about a particular race, gender, or class but celebrating our connection to one another as a collective human race," says Mukherjee. "It serves as a reminder that while we all have times when we feel disconnected and lonely, we will not give in to hopelessness. Continuing with the Joy Buddies series and surrounding myself with people who focus on joy has kept my creative spirit strong. I want to share that strength with those who need it."

The billboard, located at 1560 Broadway, between 46th and 47th Street, right above the Pele store, will be displayed for 24 hours on January 27th.
