Press release from: BIOBASE

January, 25 2006

Wolfenbüttel, Germany: BIOBASE today announced the release of its new analysis software ExPlain™, which facilitates real systems biology knowledge for the analysis of expression data. ExPlain™ is the first software system that combines the traditional downstream approach with true upstream analysis, thus enabling researchers to identify causes of specific gene expression events.

ExPlain™ was developed in Wolfenbüttel, Beverly, Massachusetts, and Novosibirsk by a team of scientific experts in the field of bioinformatics. "The ultimate and successfully attained goal was to integrate automated promoter analysis, pathway analysis, statistical and ontological analysis and information about disease relations into one tool that allows to facilitate a scientific workflow shared between experts" said Dr. Alexander Kel, project leader and Head of Bioinformatics at BIOBASE.

"The market demands a deeper biological understanding about gene regulation events and therefore such a system like ExPlain™ will meet the needs of many researchers worldwide" said Prof. Dr. Edgar Wingender, President and CSO at BIOBASE. ExPlain™ will be marketed along with the portfolio of databases for which BIOBASE is known worldwide.

"ExPlain integrates not only BIOBASE´s databases with high end algorithms, it also integrates customer data by building a complex biological network within the analysis results. Therefore it fulfills the need for more integration of data." said Holger Karas, Senior Vice President Business Development at BIOBASE. With this tight integration the users of the system can rapidly build and validate hypotheses in silico.
