NIRA increases chemical plant safety with LEL systems
NIRA Instruments, a market leader in air treatment systems for large industrial plants, has designed an LEL monitoring system to guarantee higher safety levels in chemical plants and the printing industry. Explosion and fire risks will be greatly lowered, due to constant monitoring of solvent levels in the air.Among the greatest hazards present in chemical plants, the concentration of dangerous gases in the air is probably one of the most destructive; certain gases can reach a level where they ignite, starting huge and explosive fires which can completely destroy a chemical plant. The only defense against this danger is the constant monitoring of the atmospherical composition in a plant, so as to allow action to be taken to restore gas concentration to safe operating limits before it rises to a point where a fire becomes inevitable.
NIRA's LEL System works to this precise end. The acronym LEL in the expression “LEL System” stands for Lower Explosion Limit: the minimum level of concentration, relative to the air in an environment, below which a specific combustible gas must be kept to avoid any risk of fire or detonation – which might otherwise happen at the slightest source of ignition, such as a spark. Each different combustible gas, of course, has a specific LEL, and LEL systems need to be calibrated on the gases which a particular chemical plant actually uses, since they are hugely imprecise in measuring gases different from those they have been originally calibrated for.
To face the very common situation in chemical plants where a mixture of several different combustible gases is present in the atmosphere, NIRA also manufactures more complex LEL systems, with wider sensor arrays: gas chromatography allows for a precise picture of the situation, outlining the complete composition of the atmosphere inside the chemical plant, or the printing machine, or any other industrial machine. Finally, to round out the protection offered by NIRA's systems, measures are put in place to carry out Nitrogen substitution – eliminating the dangerous gas and substituting it with inert Nitrogen – whenever necessary.
An LEL System often proves to be the first barrier between a chemical plant and a disaster, and when correctly calibrated and used, it just as often proves to be the only one needed. Fires and explosions are often quick in destroying a chemical plant, and they can be drastically reduced in chance – if not eliminated altogether – by correctly calibrating and installing NIRA's LEL system.
