European Football Championship 2008: Friendlies put Coupet top

With a few notable exceptions, footballing status is a fragile thing and nowhere more so than with goalkeepers, who have the ability to win or lose games in a moment. Which is why 90 minutes of friendly football earlier this month has given our list of the highest ranking keepers a substantial shake-up...

The Castrol Performance Index examines the teams who have made it to the UEFA EURO 2008TM finals and for the ‘keepers, points are awarded for good distribution and making saves – with the number of points depending on how difficult the stop was. They are also deducted for mistakes made that lead to goals being conceded.

Following the recent round of friendlies it's all change at the top of the keepers' Index with France’s Gregory Coupet taking the number one spot from Croatia's Stip Pletikosa – who has slipped to number three behind Jens Lehmann.

Lehmann is one of the biggest climbers in the keepers list and the rise from seventh to second will make satisfying reading for the German stopper. At 38 he is the oldest of the top twenty goalies and has been kept out of the Arsenal FC side by Manuel Almunia all season. A string of excellent saves and a clean sheet against Austria on February 6th though proved how valuable he is to his national side.

Going in the other direction is Petr Cech. Second in the list before the Czech Republic's home game against Poland, the 6'6" Chelsea FC keeper has dived six places to eighth. The antithesis of Lehmann, Cech has been in excellent form for his club, conceding just two goals in his last seven games, but a below par performance and 2-0 defeat against Poland means his CPI ranking has suffered.

Two goals conceded, two moments in a ninety minute game and Cech is almost out of the top ten. Fragile thing this footballing status.
