Interview with the Author of Breath of Fire, Book Two of the Climate of Monsters series - Mitchell Sanders
Mitchell Sanders combines a lifelong passion for science, literature, and storytelling in his Climate of Monsters series. With a PhD in biomedical sciences (WPI) and postdoctoral research experience at the Whitehead Institute/MIT, Sanders brings unparalleled depth to his exploration of the intersection of science and the supernatural. Outside his professional life as a scientist and entrepreneur, Sanders finds inspiration in his family, who encouraged him to write and publish his book series.Author Q&A
Who designed the covers?
The artwork in this four-book series is from the talented illustrator, Charles Swerdlow. As soon as I have a first draft of each book, I send him excerpts of the monsters so that he can do a rough sketch. He then finalizes my edits to the creatures and then does a full bleed rendering of the images. We then decide on which monster should be in full color and on the cover. My favorite renderings are the Werewolf in Book 1 and the Tatzelwurm and George which is the cover of Book 2.
What books/authors have influenced your writing?
In Undergrad at Boston University my Minor was Latin Language and Literature with a Major in Biology. I spent a lot of time reading novels in Latin such as the Aeneid by Virgil or the Odessey by Homer and then moved on to poetry of Catullus and Horace. In English, my favorite writers are Stephen King, James Patterson, Douglas Adams, and Neil Gaiman.
What is your favorite positive saying?
Any work is a labor of love. As a scientist I strive for perfection, as a writer I strive for a perfect blend of storytelling to weaves a web fact and fiction that immerses the reader deep into the story.
How can readers discover more about you and your work?
Most my literary works are in scientific publications and patents. I also have a business book coming out in Q1 2025. It is a different kind of horror story for entrepreneurs entitled Listen, Learn, Lead, and Launch. It is about the journey of Scientist/Entrepreneur in building a vision for a company, raising capital, executing the plan, and getting to a successful exit. Picture this: You feel un-inspired and you've sat at the computer for an hour without conquering any words. How do you get your creativity flowing?
I travel a lot and find that the scenery of the countries I visit in Europe or cities and small towns in the United States to be inspiring to write and imagine new monsters and reimagine creatures of myth from a forgotten era. Nothing captures the imagination more than new surroundings. One example is that last year I had a chance to travel to Italy and spent some time in Trieste in the Harbor looking at a swarm (smack) of jellyfish. I envisioned a woman falling into the water and be attacked by the smack, and then over several days, metamorphizing into a hideous creature that looked like a modern twist on Medusa. Each city has beautiful vistas, inspiring architecture, and gracious people to capture the sea of inspiration for writing. I also find art exhibits to be very inspiring as if the paintings and sculptures come to life before my very eyes and tell me their backstory.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I love the smell of new physical book. I also pick up two new paperbacks every time I travel for business. The first thing I do when I open the book is to smell the pages and then I usually read it cover to cover in less than 1-2 days.
What is your most unusual writing quirk?
When I am writing I tend to tune everyone and everything out. While I am in my own little world, I am completely immersed in the setting of the character and the actions are choreographed in my mind. I try and write mostly in the early morning of each day before my day job of being a C-level executive gets away from me.
What would the logline be for your book?
Climate change brings about untold perils from rapid evolution of monsters. Two unlikely heroes team up to prevent human extinction.
