Artist Daniel Garbade Brings Minotaur and More to Toledo in November Exhibition
The renowned artist Daniel Garbade, based in Mascaraque, Toledo, will present a compelling new exhibition at the San Clemente Cultural Center, hosted by the Diputación de Toledo, throughout November. The showcase includes over 30 oil-on-canvas works in a striking monochromatic black-and-white palette, deepening the symbolic and introspective nature of Garbade's art.
Garbade's Minotaur series connects with the tradition of Spanish master Pablo Picasso, who frequently invoked the mythic Minotaur as a powerful symbol of duality, creativity, and inner conflict. Much like Picasso, Garbade reinterprets this mythical creature, portraying it with a fragile, vulnerable human form that defies conventional depictions and suggests a complex tension between strength and vulnerability. In this series, the Minotaur becomes an emblem of introspection, echoing Garbade's exploration of mythological themes as allegories for the human experience.
The exhibition also presents symbolic portraits and scenes, including faces partially obscured by flowers, fruit, or objects, and a bull with its eyes hidden. These pieces invite reflection on the themes of excess and the limitations of human perception. One of the most intriguing elements is a series titled Brothers, featuring near-identical portraits of young men presented as twins, evoking themes of identity and similarity.
Additional works include shadowed scenes of men in dimly lit spaces, as well as elongated still lifes that capture moments after a meal, recalling the compositional depth and symbolism of classic Spanish still life.
A dedicated section of the exhibit presents crows juxtaposed with a white background, creating a visual dialogue that evokes mystery, desolation, and the passage of time.
Through his exploration of mythology and the human condition, Garbade's latest exhibition in Toledo offers a journey into themes of vulnerability, identity, and the often-overlooked depths of daily life.
A Spanish artist of Swiss and Cuban roots
Daniel Garbade, a Spanish visual artist with Swiss and Cuban roots, began his career in art direction and production for film and advertising, working with notable figures such as Fred Zinnemann and Yves Boiset. In addition to his work in cinema, Garbade is also celebrated as a photographer, having collaborated with prominent publications like El País and exhibited at PhotoEspaña. Among his significant works is the sculpture at Mikhail Bakunin's tomb in Bern, Switzerland, and his pieces are included in collections and museums worldwide.
Garbade's art has been consistently showcased at prominent galleries, museums, and renowned art fairs such as ARCO and Art Basel. His recent solo exhibitions include shows at ICAM in Geneva, Switzerland; the Ludwig Foundation in Cuba; and New Delhi, India. Last year, his work was featured at Toledo's Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, and this fall he concluded his exhibition Gula at Espacio La Cabina in Madrid.
Renowned for his deeply personal and unique style, Garbade has developed a distinct artistic approach characterized by minimalist ink drawings and expressive black-and-white oil paintings, which carry a profound sense of expressionism and leave a lasting impact on the art world.
