Could England House Half the World? Surprising Stats Reveal

London - October 3, 2024 - People in England often feel like the country is getting more and more crowded. But did you know England could be way more packed? If it had the same population density as Monaco, there could be an eye-watering 3.39 billion people living here! That's nearly half the world's population crammed into one country.

How Does England Compare?

Right now, England has about 430 people per square kilometre, which already feels like a lot, especially in cities like London where space is at a premium. But when you compare that to Monaco, the tiny but ultra-dense city-state on the French Riviera, England feels positively empty!

Monaco has around 26,000 people squeezed into every square kilometre, making it the most crowded place on Earth. To put that in perspective, that's more than 60 times England's population density. So, while England might feel full to the brim, in reality, it's got nothing on Monaco when it comes to packing people in.

The Big Housing Challenge

As more people move to cities like London and Manchester, the demand for housing is going through the roof. Homes are getting smaller, and people are looking for ways to make their living spaces feel bigger and more comfortable. Older homes, especially in crowded cities, are being renovated to make them more energy-efficient and suited to modern life.

Old Homes, New Solutions

Colin Greenslade, founder of Colin's Sash Windows [https://colinssashwindows.co.uk/] unearthed these statistics while doing some research. Says Colin, "I love statistics and this one was interesting! Obviously we'd have to build over all the farmland etc to fit in all those people but, never-the-less it's quite thought provoking. Colin continues, "In cities full of Victorian and Georgian houses, like London, it's not just about adding new buildings. People are also looking to improve old ones, fixing things like draughty sash windows, but keeping the traditional look. It's all about making old homes work for today's world".

With England's population still growing, the need for smart, space-saving housing solutions is more important than ever. And while England may feel crowded, just be glad we're not living with Monaco's population density!

About Colin Greenslade

I'm the founder of Colin's Sash Windows. I disrupted the sash windows market in the UK in 2014 by introducing fixed prices for uPVC sash windows in the UK. Before this they were generally only available at very high prices through window installers. Today our business is one of the market leaders in supply only windows, doors and roofs in the UK.
