In January 2024, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced development of a fluid switch using ionic polymer artificial muscles that operates at ultra-low power and produces a force 34-times greater than its weight. The artificial muscle is composed of ionic polymers and metal electrodes and can generate movement and force in response to electrical current. The high force is generated, relative to its weight, by a Polysulfonated Covalent Organic Framework (pS-COF) composed of metal electrodes and ionic polymers artificial muscle in response to electricity with ultra-low power (~0.01V). This technology showcases precise control of fluid flow in narrow spaces and is expected to open up major avenues and create breakthroughs in soft robotics, biomedical devices, and microfluidics.
On July 8, 2024, researchers at Northwestern Engineering announced development of a new soft, flexible actuator device that moves robots by expanding and contracting, similar to the movement of human muscle. The device is a cylindrical, worm-like soft robot that functions with an artificial bicep, and is capable of navigating compact, narrow hairpin curves in narrow pipe-like environments. The body of the robot was 3-D printed from regular rubber, and at a significantly low cost, and comprises a small motor to drive the actuator to enable shape change. This design is in sharp contrast to the typical rigid actuators used in robotics costing substantially more in comparison. This novel device is expected to be used in the development of low-cost, soft, and flexible robots that are safer and more practical for real-world applications.
