Insights into Chinese cultural concepts through Views on Civilization

The highly acclaimed documentary series Views on Civilization continues to captivate audiences with its latest season, which explores Chinese cultural ideas through daily life and traditions.

Season 3 opens with a focus on clothing, highlighting the historical roots and significance of modern Hanfu fashion, offering a glimpse into the Chinese perspective on clothing culture. This six-episode season, with each episode lasting around 10 minutes, covers daily life topics like clothing, food, housing and transportation, providing a fresh perspective on Chinese culture and a deeper understanding of the people's values and lifestyle.

In 2022 and 2023, the first two seasons of Views on Civilization explored Chinese philosophy, history and culture, earning widespread praise and attention on social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook for their engaging content and profound depiction of Chinese culture.

Building on the first season, the second season consists of nine episodes featuring Pakistani scholar Zoon Ahmed Khan, who shares stories from Chinese and foreign history and culture. She references ancient Chinese proverbs, such as "Say what you mean and do what you say", "I would rather die for the benefit of my country", "The wise adapt to the times and change accordingly", "Unite in harmony and work together for common progress", "The welfare of the people is paramount", and "Seek common ground while reserving differences, and blend with each other", to discuss the historical roots of traditional virtues of integrity, patriotism, innovation, unity, compassion and equality. Episodes seven to nine focus on specific cultural fields-music, dance and painting-narrating through the perspectives of young scholars and artists around the theme of mutual learning among civilizations.

With over 200 countries and regions, 2,500 ethnic groups and various religions, a world with only one lifestyle, language, music or style of dress is unimaginable. Shakeel Ahmad Ramay, CEO of Asian Institute of Eco-civilization Research and Development, firmly believes that the progress of humanity relies on cultural exchange. He emphasizes that culture and art have their own languages that bring people together, fostering love and harmony between nations. While languages may differ, the message of art remains universal, as love is a shared human experience meant to serve humanity.

As globalization and information technology advance, the interaction between different civilizations is more extensive and profound than ever. Why should maintaining the diversity of world civilizations become a significant global issue? David Morris, vice-chair of ESCAP Sustainable Business Network, shares his perspective on this in the film: "Crossing cultural, political and economic barriers to seek respect and cooperation is not easy and has always been a challenge for humanity. However, in the 21st century, with pressures at both global and local levels, we really need to work harder."
