Interview with the Author of Tinkle Tinkle Little One - DeCarol Jovanovic

DeCarol Jovanovic brings over 30 years of experience working with children to this innovative book. A certified newborn care specialist and sleep advocate, DeCarol developed a potty training song that has resonated with children and parents worldwide. Her song, also titled "Tinkle Tinkle Little One," has been embraced by recording artists and little ones across the globe.

In addition to her work with children, DeCarol is a service-disabled veteran with a distinguished career that includes service and deployment in Okinawa, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and various locations across the USA. She holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland University College and a Master of Arts from Webster University. DeCarol is also known for her "Don't Wake the Baby" inspired signs, further showcasing her dedication to helping families.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I grew up in South Carolina and served in the United States Air Force. I never thought about potty training until I became a parent and my child started his potty training journey. He understood the concept of using the potty but was still having challenges. I realized it would be nice to have a book that detailed simple steps to using the potty and featured little children that looked like him.

How did you come up with the title?

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is a favorite around my house. The song Tinkle Tinkle Little One © was something that I wrote while beginning the potty training process with my daughter. Singing helped her enjoy her potty time and distract her from how long she'd been sitting.

What are your current projects?

My current projects are taking me from writing and to methods families can use reduce food waste. I created an initiative entitled Willie's Abundant Harvest Transfer ©, also known as WAHT. The initiative allows families to find farms, animal sanctuaries, and rescues who will accept overripe fruit, vegetables, and perishables. Willie's Abundant Harvest Transfer © has farm partners across the USA. Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.

Dream Ellison has had the opportunity to discuss family topics on television with Fox 5 DC and their support means a lot to our company. Our company has grown over the past year and part of our success comes from talking to the local community about family topics like bath safety and safe sleep for infants. Because of the support from Fox 5 DC, we've been able to blog for other non-profit organizations and contribute articles to local publications.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

I travel throughout Northern Virginia for book signings and to provide book donations made possible by Eartha's United Learning Advocacy Program ©, also known as the EULA Program. The goal of the EULA Program is to provide organizations and independently owned daycare/preschools with quality books that make learning about staying healthy fun. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

I learned tidbits of information every Parent should know. For starters, most children aren't ready to start potty training until they are between the ages of 2 and 3. Parents should set the stage for success by having the potty chair accessible and placed in designated areas for use. Watch for signs your child is ready to potty train; examples would be pulling at a wet diaper for removal or seeking privacy when going to take a poop. Whether your child has a success or failure, be patient, provide encouragement, and give them opportunity to learn.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Potty training can take weeks or months. How do you relax?

Finding pockets of quiet time is how I usually relax. Knowing my children are getting a good night's sleep is also relaxing. I'm certified as a Newborn Care Specialist and I interact with Child Sleep Consultants on a routine bases. What is your favorite positive saying?

My favorite saying is "Success does not Happen by Accident". I wrote my book to help little ones understand the concept of sitting on the potty and seeing how to successfully use the potty. When I wrote my book, I wanted little boys and girls to feel prepared for potty training success. The desire to have little boys and girls to establish healthy practices was also a motivation behind Eartha's United Learning Advocacy Program ©.
