Interview with Children's Book Author Tracy L. Markley - Author of Rhyming Riley

Tracy L. Markley is an award-winning personal trainer, educator, and author with over three decades of experience in the fitness industry. As the owner of Tracy Markley's Fitness and a recognized figure in the field, she has been honored as one of 2024 America's Top Fitness Educators by the National Fitness Hall of Fame and received the 2021 IDEA World Personal Trainer of the Year award. Tracy's expertise spans stroke recovery, senior balance, functional training, and fall prevention, with her impactful stroke recovery book, The Stroke of an Artist: The Journey of a Fitness Trainer and a Stroke Survivor, marking the beginning of her successful writing career. With fifteen books to her name, including two children's books, Tracy also contributes to the field through her advanced education courses and hosts The Health and Fitness Show with Tracy podcast.

Author Q&A

What inspired you to write your first book?

While training Gary, a stroke survivor who I met when he walked into the gym in a walker we experienced such a bod and he had an incredible recovery. We both learned so much and he wanted his story shared. This turned into the book, The Stroke of an Artist, The Journey of a Fitness Trainer and a Stroke Survivor.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I would say my writing style is honest. With most of my books I am sharing knowledge or stories to help people.

How did you come up with the title?

I came up with the title for this recent book, Rhyming Riley the Dog that Rhymes all the time, because he was just as cute and sweat as I shared him in the book. I always liked telling rhymes. After a lot of loss and grief in my life, many wanted me to write about. When I began I thought, Nope, not now. I need to write something just filled with joy and fun. This is when I though Rhyming Riley.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

It would be that adopting dogs and giving them, love, fun, toys and treats brings joy to both you and the dog. It is special.

How much of the book is realistic?

Pretty much 100%. The book is based on me and Riley.

What book are you reading now?

I just read a cute book called Amara's Yoga Journey, A Yoga Pose Story. I met a new friend this year and just learned she wrote this children's book. It's lovely.

What are your current projects?

I am taking a couple months off from writing since Rhyming Riley Published last week. I have two more books in progress.

Do you see writing as a career?

I actually do now. I have many books I have published and I also have written two CEC courses for the fitness industry and I have done some writing for magazines and newspapers.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I always wanted to write a book with muscle anatomy in it. I knew one day I would. When my client Gary from my first book and I talked about the book to share knowledge to help others, I knew I had to put muscles illustrations in the book to help the reader and stroke survivor learn. I have written from then.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

My most current book after Rhyming Riley will be kids and sports. It is in the progress
