INNOVATIVE PRESCHOOL LITERACY CURRICULUM BASED ON SCIENCE OF READING

Charlotte mother of two and owner of Moving Little Minds, LLC launches an innovative literacy curriculum dedicated to building key pre-reading skills from the start, with a focus on the alphabet, phonological awareness and pre-writing skills.

The curriculum is based on research related to the science of reading and helps empower teachers to target the right skills with age-appropriate and engaging games, multisensory activities, systematic instruction, movement and play.

"Pre-literacy skills are vital for later learning success," says Melissa McCall, owner of Moving Little Minds, LLC. "I wanted to design a curriculum that provides the tools to help children build a strong foundation in literacy from the start, but also builds a love for learning through engagement and play."

McCall is passionate about helping educators champion early literacy in their classrooms. With the science of reading movement sweeping the country, an emphasis has been placed on elementary curriculums. However, there is also a need in the market for support during the preschool years to ensure children are building the right skills to lay the groundwork for reading success.

Throughout her 15+ years of teaching, McCall has seen firsthand that hands-on learning through poetry, games, play, movement and multisensory exploration are much more effective than more rigid traditional methods, such as alphabet tracing sheets.

"I aim to merge instruction with play in the form of hands-on learning," explains McCall. "Easy-to-set-up activities such as flashlight scavenger hunts, puppet play, and guess the letter games excite children so that they have fun while also gaining key literacy skills."

Preschool teachers and parents are able to access easy activities and strategies to build on now to better prepare children and to set them up to succeed. The curriculum ensures a supportive literacy journey during the important early years.

"There's no need to start from scratch when lesson planning," says McCall. "This curriculum is built upon the latest research and aligned with national learning standards. It delivers a comprehensive and effective approach to early literacy development."

With the launch of this innovative curriculum, teachers are able become a champion for early literacy with learning extension and academic center ideas, which are included in the program as well.

McCall graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her M.A. Ed. in Special Education from Western Carolina University.
