New Research In Action Vendor Selection Matrix™ Report -

Germany - August 1st, 2024: Over the past year, the observability market has experienced substantial evolution, driven by the expansion into modern ecosystems such as hybrid cloud environments and the adoption of advanced technologies like AI. Practices such as DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) have further propelled the demand for robust observability solutions. Key developments include notable acquisitions, enhancing capabilities and integration of security measures, underscoring the necessity to federate data across events, logs, traces, and metrics. These advancements enable comprehensive monitoring and diagnostics. As organizations increasingly adopt these practices, the observability landscape is set to broaden, encompassing a holistic view across applications, infrastructures, user experiences, best practices, and business outcomes. This study evaluates various vendors in this dynamic market, providing insights to navigate the expanding observability ecosystem effectively.

A significant proportion of organizations are actively engaging with Observability Platforms. Currently, 22.8% are piloting these platforms, indicating a commitment to exploring their benefits before full-scale deployment. Additionally, 21.6% are in the process of implementation, and 17.1% have fully implemented and are using these platforms. Meanwhile, 12.2% are evaluating options, signaling growing interest and potential future adoption. However, 22.8% of respondents have no plans to implement such a platform, possibly due to skepticism or other priorities. Furthermore, 3.5% have stopped using these solutions, potentially reflecting dissatisfaction, or a strategic shift.

A new Research In Action GmbH global survey of 1,000 IT and business managers with budget responsibility in enterprises globally examined their Observability practices and plans for 2024. The survey also captured which software vendors are the most known and what these leaders think about those vendor's products and services.

The Vendor Selection Matrix™ is a primarily survey-based methodology for vendor evaluation where 63% of the evaluation is based on a survey of enterprise business decision makers and 37% on the analyst's opinion. The analyst's input is fed by a combination of intensive interviews with software or services vendors and their clients, plus their informed, independent point-of-view as an analyst. All of this combines to make Research In Action Vendor Selection Matrix™ reports unique. This approach is one of the key differentiators of Research In Action in market research. For this report we interviewed 1,000 IT and business managers with budget responsibility in enterprises globally. We selected those vendors who achieved the best evaluations scores from the buyers but disregarded those with fewer than 15 evaluations.

Eveline Oehrlich, Research Director for IT Automation and James McCormick, Research Director for Marketing Automation at Research In Action GmbH, comment on the research:
● Observability is essential to understand internal states of systems: At the root of Observability lies the concept of control theory, originating from engineering disciplines to measure and manage the internal states of a system. The term "Observability" itself was adapted into the software industry by pioneers in the field of site reliability engineering (SRE) and systems architecture, notably within organizations like Google. Observability evolved from traditional Application Performance Management (APM) due to the increasing complexity of modern software environments, including microservices, distributed systems, and cloud-native architectures.
● Welcome to the next generation of management. Application Performance Management (APM) primarily focused on monitoring application performance metrics and user experiences, but it often fell short in providing deep insights into system behaviors and root causes of issues. Observability, on the other hand, extends beyond APM by integrating logs, metrics, and traces to offer a more comprehensive view. This shift was driven by the need for more dynamic and resilient systems capable of rapid issue identification and resolution, particularly in the context of DevOps and SRE practices. The demand for better understanding and managing the intricate interactions within complex ecosystems spurred the evolution from APM to Observability, emphasizing the importance of holistic visibility and proactive system management.
● The call for comprehensive insights into behaviours (systems, applications, users) has been heard by almost all vendors: Unified observability platforms consolidate monitoring, logging, and tracing, offering a centralized view of the entire IT and business technology ecosystem. This holistic approach simplifies management, enhances efficiency, and reduces operational overhead, ensuring seamless operations and informed decision-making with more accurate insights and streamlined workflows to proactively enable business teams in their day-to-day digital operations.
● Your digital business needs observability: Observability is critical for digital businesses and digital users today because it provides comprehensive visibility into complex IT environments, ensuring seamless and efficient business operations. By integrating monitoring, logging, and tracing, observability enables quicker identification and resolution of issues, minimizing downtime and enhancing user experience. It supports proactive system management, allowing businesses to anticipate and address potential problems before they impact users. This capability is essential in the fast-paced digital landscape, where user expectations for performance and reliability are higher than ever.
● AI already has and will have a great impact on this market: In the future, as applications increasingly leverage AI, observability will become even more crucial. AI-driven applications require precise and continuous monitoring to ensure they function correctly and efficiently. Observability will evolve to incorporate advanced AI and machine learning techniques, enabling predictive analytics and automated anomaly detection. This will enhance the ability to manage and optimize AI applications, providing deeper insights into their behavior and performance. Ultimately, observability will support the ongoing development and deployment of AI, ensuring that digital businesses can continue to innovate and deliver exceptional user experiences.
● Who came out on top?
