Press release from: SwissIX Internet Exchange

The largest Swiss Internet Exchange Point SwissIX upgrades its backbone to 100 Gbps. 100 Gbps ports are now also available to members and participants.

Zurich, August 30, 2016 -- SwissIX Internet Exchange, the largest Internet exchange point in Switzerland, has completed a hardware upgrade of its four core nodes and is now capable of delivering 100 Gbps port speeds in these locations. Interconnection bandwidth between core sites has also been increased to 100 Gbps. This upgrade marks an important milestone in the SwissIX2020 infrastructure project.

Begun in June 2015 SwissIX2020 is aimed to ensure reliability and future scalability of the exchange. "At SwissIX we see data volumes double about every twelve to 18 months, which is faster than More's Law. Creating and maintaining a sustainable and scalable infrastructure in a high bandwidth environment distributed across several data centers is a demanding challenge we embrace with a lot of enthusiasm", said Ulf Kieber, President of the SwissIX Internet Exchange Association. Increasing international response has significantly contributed to the recent traffic growth. SwissIX will continue its project SwissIX2020 to further improve services.

With this upgrade SwissIX also starts offering 100 Gbps ports to peers. "Switzerland is a rapidly growing Internet market. Adding 100 Gbps ports to our product portfolio will keep us ahead of bandwidth demands", Ulf Kieber resumes. A wide set of connected networks, a competitive service offering and data center neutrality will further support the attractiveness of the exchange and ensure high quality access to Swiss Internet businesses and customers.

Founded in 2001, the SwissIX Internet Exchange Association engages in promoting the local exchange of Internet traffic and furthering of the Internet business in Switzerland. At nine locations in Zurich, Basel, and Bern, SwissIX Internet Exchange offers a neutral, reliable, distributed and interconnected infrastructure for exchanging Internet traffic to its members and participants. SwissIX Internet Exchange is the largest Internet exchange point in Switzerland with currently more than 170 connected peers.
