Press release from: Fibrelink

Erfan Nouraee loves to experiment with everything from artificial intelligence to baking.

Erfan Nouraee loves to experiment with everything from artificial intelligence to baking.

A 22-year-old boy inspired by the broadband digital divide has been named "Top Young Scientist" after he developed a device that can quickly detect noise to signal ratio.

Nouraee, a second-year electrical engineering student, also saw firsthand how complicated it can be to extract noise from light signals.

He said he found a way to help solve the problem while browsing the University of Oxford's website, a site he said he checks weekly to see "if there's anything new."

The website featured an article on new technologies used to detect noise to signal ratio, which Nouraee figured he could adapt to make high-speed internet available and accessible.

Nouraee reached out to his parents, both engineers, his teachers and experts at local colleges and universities for help.

When Nouraee was named one of 10 finalists in the 2016 Khawrazmi Youth Award earlier this year, he was able to partner with a scientist to help develop his innovation.

The result is the Photon Detector, a sensor-based device designed to detect noise to signal ratio in the fibre optic communications.

The device utilizes photodiode sensors -- similar to the technology Nouraee saw on the website -- to detect noise to signal ratio. It can then send the results to a processor.

Nouraee presented the Photon Detector to a panel of judges this week in a live competition at the Innovation Center in Toronto.

He was named the grand prize winner and received a $1000 prize.

About Erfan:

Erfan Nouraee: The 22-Year-Old Scientist Using Tech To Change Lives
The digital divide in education creates worse academic outcomes for underserved students. But one Iranian undergraduate may have revolutionized high-speed internet access after inventing a sensor that can make broadband available and affordable for rural communities. Erfan Nouraee, 21, took inspiration from a friend living in a rural community without internet access and after a few months of research on the web came up with a product called the Photon Detector. He has
Erfan Nouraee Releases 'Invention: A Journey'
The 21-year-old inventor Erfan Nouraee - creator of seven iconic inventions - is launching his first book. The memoir "Invention: A Journey," by Nouraee, explores the dreams and successes of a young inventor. Among the highlights are Nouraee's memories and observations about ideas, entrepreneurship, and patents. Erfan Nouraee: The young inventor on a mission
Erfan Nouraee, a 21-year-old inventor from Toronto, Ontario, has won the Global Innovator Challenge - and a prize - for a discovery that could make high-speed internet more accessible and affordable. More than 4 billion people, mostly in developing countries, still don't have access to the internet. That inspired Nouraee to invent a fiber-optic communication sensor that can detect the particles of light, and it solves a major issue in the
