Rona inc. (hereinafter Rona) and its President, Andrew Iacobucci (hereinafter Iacobucci), are subject to a Small Claims Court action by Dave Coutts (hereinafter Coutts). Coutts who purchased a Rona product online with a confirmation email. Some time later Coutts was told that "at your (his) request" the order had been cancelled. As Coutts in his Claim against Rona issued April 22, 2024 states that he did not cancel the order and this caused him mental anguish, inconvenience and loss of time to try to find out what was going on.

It turned out that Rona had unilaterally cancelled the order which Nouren, Supervisor at the Executive Escalations Desk, said was "an unfortunate IT (Information Technology) bug" which had happened in the past. However, even though they were aware of the problem they did not take steps to fix the problem. IT people told Coutts that the problem could likely be remedied by a professional IT person in an hour or two at a cost from an independent individual or company for as little as $500.

As three senior management people were made aware of the problem, Coutts wondered If the direction came from the top, that is Rona President lacobucci. Consequently Iacobucci was also named in the Claim issued in the Brampton Small Claims Court, Ontario.

Rona has annual sales in the 4 billion dollar range so one would think they could afford to fix a problem but instead they preferred to just continue to inconvenience its customers. Rona is owned by a USA 10 billion dollar company Sycamore Partners who own a number of retail companies including Staples, so Coutts is exploring asking the Court permission to cross-examine a Director of Sycamore Partners to see if this unethical behaviour is a company policy.
