Scoliosis SOS Clinic Celebrates it 10th Anniversary

SCOLIOSIS - THE KEY FACTS:

Scoliosis is a medical term used to describe an excessive sideways curvature of the spine.

Scoliosis affects roughly 4 per cent of the world’s population.

Scoliosis patients often suffer from back pain, muscular imbalance, and reduced mobility. Having a visibly curved back often negatively impacts the patient’s self-esteem, and in some cases, the condition can lead to compromised breathing.

The most common form of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, which accounts for roughly 80% of all cases. The causes of idiopathic scoliosis are unknown, but the condition usually develops during adolescence and is more common amongst females.

Scoliosis can also develop as a result of other conditions, such as cerebral palsy, Marfan syndrome, muscular dystrophy, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and Klippel-Feil syndrome.

Common treatments for scoliosis include spinal fusion surgery (where the spine’s curve is corrected using surgical techniques) and bracing (which involves wearing a rigid plastic body brace to prevent the curve from progressing any further).

WHAT DO WE OFFER SCOLIOSIS SUFFERERS?

Erika Maude founded the Scoliosis SOS Clinic in 2006 after receiving treatment for her own scoliosis at a clinic in Spain. Erika had been told that she would need surgery to correct her curved spine, but instead she travelled abroad and was treated using the Schroth method, which focuses on reducing the patient’s curve with stretches and exercises.

This treatment method improved Erika’s quality of life immeasurably, and since non-surgical scoliosis treatments were not available in the UK at that time, Erika founded Scoliosis SOS in order to give British scoliotics a real alternative to risky and invasive surgical procedures.

The Scoliosis SOS Clinic was originally located in Erika’s native Suffolk, but demand soon grew far beyond expectations, with patients travelling from all over the United Kingdom and beyond in search of effective scoliosis treatment. In 2009, it was decided that the Clinic would relocate to London, making it more accessible to scoliosis sufferers from further afield.
