Woman with brain injury gives death a miss

Doctors at SevenHills Hospital in Andheri help 37-yrs-old lady to give death a miss when the city’s top doctors chose to avoid taking up her case.

Mumbai: Jyotsna Parmar is a 37 years old lady who had been suffering from epilepsy – a disorder wherein the nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, thereby causing seizures/fits – for ten long years. Her condition was such that she used to face 2-3 episodes of fits daily for all these years.

In 2010, she suffered from a severe fit again and was rushed to KEM Hospital where doctors diagnosed her with right temporal lobe AV malformation. AVM is a condition in which there is an abnormal tangle or cluster of the arteries and the veins inside the brain. Doctors then suggested a high-risk surgery to treat the same but owing to such risk factors; the family was reluctant to go ahead with the surgery. They chose to live with the disease instead.

Recently in May 2016, her condition got critical as she suffered from massive brain hemorrhage caused by a rupture of the AVM. As the case was complex, some of the city’s top hospitals refused to operate on her. She was then admitted to SevenHills Hospital where she was evaluated with angiography of the brain, after being in coma for 15-20 days. Dr. Khursheed Ansari, Neurosurgeon at SevenHills Hospital, and his team, found a 4cm AVM in the right temporal lobe of the patient.

She was advised a surgery with lower chances of survival and higher level of risk factor than before. But since it was much needed, the patient and the family agreed to go ahead with the surgery in spite of the huge risk factor involved. The operation to remove this AV malformation from the brain took around 7-8 hours.

“This rare and complex surgical process was a success and the patient is stable now, with no episodes of fits”, said the doctor.
