Tech initiative for matching covid-19 patients with plasma donors by young engineering student and leading health professionals.

In todays testing time of corona panademic, Avi Shah, young engineering student from Symbiosis Institute of technology, Pune and Dr. Deepak & Jyotsana Patel founder of Kripa Nusring home from Mumbai have launched tech platform www.donatingplasma.in to help covid patients to recover fast.

The donating plasma founders are clear that they are not involved in the medical aspect of the process. Their job is to connect prospective donors to patients whose doctors may have recommended the treatment. Once that is done, it is for the doctors to assess and decide procedures.

“We needed to do it now not because we are in testing time and it’s a problem that needs to be solved immediately," says Avi Shah. “I live in mumbai and I have seen what’s happening with covid-19 in the last few months. This helps to solve a problem that we faced, for other people who might need it too."

Clinical trials for convalescent plasma therapy only began in India in May though the treatment is allowed outside controlled trials if hospitals adhere to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines. The plasma of a recovered, healthy donor ideally 14-28 days after the first negative test post infection contains antibodies that help fight the virus if transfused in a sick patient.

We really don’t know what will happen next, all we know is we want to help as many people as possible." Says Dr. Deepak Patel. People were facing difficulty in acquiring blood plasma. This plasma bank will thus help in accessing it, but it will only work if people come forward to donate blood plasma.

“Plasma donations takes from 45 minutes to an hour after basic tests are run on the donor, After this, a certificate is given to the donor acknowledging his/her service. Any COVID-19 patient who recovered from the disease 14 days prior is eligible to donate plasma. The donor should weigh at least 50 kilograms [110 pounds] and be in the 18-60 age group” added co-founder Dr. Jyotsana Patel.
