June round up at Mount Pleasant Golf Club, Bedfordshire
‘Ascot’ Ladies Day on Thursday 16th June saw 90 ladies attend the annual Afternoon Tea at Mount Pleasant. Each year the event raises funds for the Lady Captains charity and this year’s amount raised was £578 for Macmillan Cancer Research.Longest Day Challenge
On Saturday 18th June, Ian Comerford (Club Captain) Craig Pearce (Vice Captain), Mark Stanley & Steve Poulsen took part in the Macmillan longest day challenge. Each played 72 holes in a day, starting at 4:30am and rounded off the evening with a bbq for family and friends. The next day saw Kevin Morton, Jason Macanaspie, Lawrence Johns and Paul Robson complete the same task. The two groups between them raised an incredible £4,000.
Club Championship
On the weekend of 25th and 26th, the Men’s and Ladies Club Championship took place. The Men’s had record entries for the first round and despite the recent heavy rainfall, the course was in fantastic condition. 22 players made the cut after 18 holes on the Saturday with Craig Pearce leading by two shots from Steve Moss and Shane Cowie.
After 9 holes on the Sunday 7 players were within two shots of each other and then after 12 holes Gavin Simkins had crept into the lead. Gavin Simkins posted a second round score of 74 and playing two holes behind was Craig Pearce, just one shot behind playing the last. Craig played a great pitch out of the long rough and holed the 10-foot putt to force a sudden death play-off.
At the first play-off hole both Crag and Gavin made 4’s and then at the second Gavin made a 5 and Craig missed his putt from 15 feet resulting in Gavin Simkins winning the Men’s Club Championship for the second time, the last time was 22 years ago! Craig Pearce finished as runner-up and Shane Cowie was third, one shot behind.
In the Ladies Championship Mary Peilow held the lead after 18 holes and went to record an impressive win over Alison Stroomer as runner up and Jean Cameron was third. Mary has previously held the title four times, the last time being 2010.
