umttr to host Third Annual 3v3 Basketball Tournament - Suicide Prevention Fundraiser

Montgomery County, MD: umttr (“You Matter”) is proud to announce that it will host the Third Annual umttr 3v3 Basketball Tournament on June 12th at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, from 1pm to 6pm. Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit mental health education and peer-led, evidence-based suicide prevention programs. Basketball players in high school, college, and adult age brackets will compete in the tournament. Celebrity guests, including former NBA players and local elected officials, will be in attendance. This community event will also feature mental health workshops, a silent auction, special activities, and more.
The 3v3 basketball tournament is umttr’s third memorial tournament. The tournament honors the memory of Winston Churchill High student and varsity athlete Evan Rosenstock, who lost his life to suicide as a result of depression following back surgery in 2013.
According to the CDC, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among adolescents ages 12 - 17 and the 3rd for youth 10 - 24 years old. In partnership with National Alliance of Mental Illness - Montgomery County, The Campaign to Change Direction, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Positive Coaching Alliance, umttr works to end suicide by spreading awareness throughout the Mid-Atlantic, hosting community events, and funding prevention programs.
“Empowering our young adults to create programs and events that are for THEIR friends and age group is the key to the success of umttr. Our grassroots effort has been led by kids for kids” said Susan Rosenstock, Evan’s mom and co-founder of umttr.
As a founding member of the Campaign to Change Direction, a collaborative effort with the White House’s Joining Forces initiative, umttr will use the Third Annual umttr 3v3 Basketball Tournament as an opportunity to educate teens and young adults about the five signs of emotional suffering – personality change, agitation, withdrawal, poor self-care, and hopelessness.
Former NBA player Michael Sweetney, who will be in attendance at the tournament, stated, “This is a great opportunity for students to have fun, play ball, and come away with a positive message – when you feel like giving up, just remember that you matter. Your life matters.”
