RUDERER ADHESIVE TECHNOLOGY - TUM Munich and the Hyperloop: Futuristic technology with high-tech adhesive
Although the Hyperloop literally encapsulates you, the view inside, thanks to high-performance adhesive, is incredibly clear. The Hyperloop is an emerging mode of transport that is anticipated to conquer speeds of up to 1250 kilometres per hour through a vacuum tube. Elon Musk, the entrepreneur, initially proposed the concept in August 2013. The Tesla CEO launched the "Hyperloop Pod Competition" a couple years later. Several international teams competed in these contests for three consecutive years, each showcasing operational prototypes with a focus on design, technology, and speed. Among the competitors was a team from the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The young research team twice clinched the prize for the fastest pod, which ultimately achieved a top speed of 482 kilometers per hour. This breakthrough resulted in Europe's inaugural test track in Ottobrunn, near Munich. On July 10, 2023, the first ever journey with passengers under vacuum conditions took place there. Though the ride through the narrow tube is still just a future concept, the future is looking bright for TU Munich. In 2013, he revealed his dream of mobility to the world: the Hyperloop train. A fusion of a supersonic aircraft, high-speed train, and hovercraft. With his dream realized, passengers will zoom through steel or concrete tubes in capsules, called pods, at a staggering speed of 1250 kilometers per hour. To compare, the speed of sound is approximately 1235.5 kilometers per hour. The propulsion is either magnetic levitation or electromagnetic, making the pods glide almost frictionlessly on an air cushion. In both propulsion methods, the tubes have a very low air pressure, close to absolute vacuum.
The first passenger voyage under vacuum conditions took place on July 10, 2023, in Ottobrunn, near Munich. It marks the first Hyperloop test track in Europe, certified for passenger operations under vacuum conditions. A student team from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) made it possible. A few years earlier, they had taken part in a competition called "SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition", launched by Elon Musk to accelerate Hyperloop’s development.
On the 1.6-kilometre test track in Hawthorne (California), TUM's WARR (Academic Association for Rocket Technology and Space Travel) Hyperloop Team's pod achieved the highest speed on January 29, 2017.
An adhesive lights up the vision of the future
The first passenger ride in the summer of 2023 gave a first glimpse into the emerging future mobility solution. On a test track of 24 metres, the pod reached a top speed of 16 kilometres per hour. The TUM Hyperloop Team is aiming for speeds of up to 900 kilometers per hour with their technology. Their system comprises a network of tubes with a diameter of around four meters, a passenger module, and an operating control centre with control and vacuum pumps. Light diffusers, illuminated by LEDs, are attached to the tubes to ensure uniform lighting. LED lighting is also found on the outer edges of the passenger capsule. To attach these distinctive, slightly curved light strips, the TUM Hyperloop Team opted for the crystal-clear 2-C MMA adhesive technicoll® 9414 by RUDERER Klebetechnik.
Essential to this decision was that this high-performance adhesive forms a transparent adhesive joint and does not adversely affect the appearance. The adhesive points seamlessly closed out with the high-quality plastic surfaces and supported the soft lighting effect, contributing to a successful outcome. Due to its excellent flexibility, exceptional adhesive power and high temperature and media resistance, technicoll® 9414 also extends the lifespan and durability of the light diffusers, even at high speeds.
Whether the Hyperloop will be a safe, sustainable, and economically viable solution to transport problems in Europe and the world in the future remains to be seen. But remember, should you one day sit in this super-fast transport medium, a billionaire wished to connect the world with vacuum tunnels, but it was an adhesive that illuminated this vision of the future.
