Microbial cellulose Market By Growth Medium (Synthetic, Natural), By Application (Food and Beverage, Medical, Cosmetics and Personal Care, Paper, Textile, Others): Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2023-2032

Microbial cellulose or biocellulose is commercially used as a raw material source for plant-free rayon and fabric. The heavy usage of petroleum-based chemical fibers such as acrylon, nylon, terylene, and polypropylene has caused severe environment issues owing to their non-degradable nature and this has led to growing adoption of microbial cellulose in textile industry. Compared to plant cellulose, microbial cellulose is easy to purify, therefore lessening the environmental impacts.

Further, microbial cellulose is widely used as a binder for paper production as it is made of tiny cellulose microfibril clusters. This property boosts the durability and strength of the pulp when employed as paper. The addition of degraded microbial cellulose to wood pulp fibers helps create paper sheets with improved folding endurance and tensile strength.

Growth of the microbial cellulose market is attributed to growing demand from cosmetics & personal care, food & beverage and medical industries. Microbial cellulose can also act as an emulsion stabilizer and is widely used in face masks for the delivery of active compounds and improved skin hydration. Microbial cellulose is gaining popularity in cosmetics & personal care applications owing to its non-toxic and biocompatible properties.

In recent years, there has been an upsurge in environmental concerns caused by cosmetics & personal care products derived from harmful substances. Hence, nowadays, microbial cellulose, which is a natural product with excellent cosmetic properties and low cost has been gaining traction in cosmetics & personal care applications.

Moreover, microbial cellulose is primarily used in the production of cosmetic masks. It can also be used as an emulsion stabilizer and cream. Compared to silk face masks, face masks composed of microbial cellulose have the exceptional water-holding capability and offer a favorable feeling of coolness as well as smoothness because of nanoscale three-dimensional reticulated network of microbial cellulose. Besides, the favorably porous microstructure allows microbial cellulose to load different nutrients and ingredients with therapeutic functions. Moreover, face masks of microbial cellulose can also be utilized in cosmeceuticals and mild skin disease treatment.

The microbial cellulose market is segmented into growth medium, application, and region. On the basis of growth medium, the market is categorized into synthetic and natural. Natural is the fastest growing segment with the highest CAGR. Various natural growth mediums are used for microbial cellulose production, such as sugar beet molasses, tobacco waste extract, cheese whey media, corn steep liquor, distillery effluent, fruit juice, corn stalks, corncob acid hydrolysate, waste material from wine production, and waste beer yeast.  Using natural medium for microbial cellulose production is cost efficient than producing microbial cellulose using synthetic media.

As per application, the market is divided into food & beverage, medical, cosmetics & personal care, paper, textile, and others. Food & beverage is the fastest growing segment with the highest CAGR. Microbial cellulose is recognized by the FDA as generally safe food. As a fiber, it is regarded as an exceptional indigestible food. Microbial cellulose can form hydrogels and the rheological properties of microbial cellulose have led to its usage in the food & beverage industry. It is used as a bacterial cellulose gel, known as Nata, which is consumed as a dessert; multifunctional food components in order to retain the properties of food & beverages as a stabilizer, thickener, and texture modifier. Besides, it can be used as a food packing material owing to its biodegradability and edibility. Also, microbial cellulose is used in food packaging as a film and coating.

Microbial cellulose is a pure exocellular polysaccharide made by microorganisms and has numerous superior properties compared to plant-derived cellulose, such as high surface area, high water-holding capability, biocompatibility, and rheological properties. Owing to its thickening, suspending, water holding, bulking, stabilizing, and fluid properties, microbial cellulose is used as a low-calorie bulking ingredient for the production of novel rich functional foods of distinct forms including powder gelatinous which promote its use in the food & beverage sector.

Further, microbial cellulose is also used as a filtration material due to the mesh-like fibrous network. In order to achieve a robust filter, different compounds are added to the microbial cellulose to improve its specificity to filtrates. One of these compounds are graphene oxide, which results in a filter with high water stability, mechanical strength, and highly selective ionic attraction which makes it an efficient filtration method in water purification. Moreover, palladium nanoparticles can also be incorporated which are effective filters of industrial organic dyes. The composite microbial cellulose filters can remove 99% of methylene orange from wastewater, along with the removal of heavy metals, showing 50% copper removal.

In recent years, various speaker producers are using microbial cellulose to design high-quality headphones. Several multinational manufacturers, including Acer, Creative, Klipsch, Audioquest, and Panasonic have commercial products that are equipped with a microbial cellulose diaphragm. The Audioquest headphone drivers achieve true pistonic motion through the implementation of an ultra-rigid microbial diaphragm. Also, Creative bio-cellulose diaphragms can provide the same sound velocity as titanium or aluminum diaphragms while adding the warmer and more delicate sound of paper diaphragms.

The key players profiled in the study include Ashland, Axcelon Biopolymers Corporation, BacPolyZyme, BIOESQUE, Borregaard AS, BOWIL Biotech Sp. z o.o., HBBE, HNB BIO CO., LTD, HYSSES, and Merck KGaA.
