Upper-air Sounding System Developed by UrFU Specialists is to be used at Cosmodrome “Vostochny”
The representatives of UrFU Institute of Radio Electronics and Information Technologies participated in the testing of a system, installed on the carrier rocket "Soyuz 2.1a"In March 2016, the specialists of the Institute of Radio Electronics and Information Technologies of Ural Federal University participated in complex testing of the Vostochny cosmodrome’s launcher. During the tests, which last for five days in a row, the rocket is installed on the launch pad of the cosmodrome in order to check systems and units of launching and instrumentation systems. At this stage, the specialists carry out the full cycle of works on preparation of the rocket for launch, except for fueling the rocket’s tanks. The purpose of the testing is to check that all systems of cosmodrome are ready for the upcoming launch of the carrier rocket "Soyuz 2.1a", which is scheduled for April 2016.
The area of responsibility of UrFU includes Upper-air Sounding System, developed by the specialists of the Institute of Radio Electronics and Information Technologies. Upper-air Sounding System provides the services of the launching complex with the information about parameters of the atmosphere, from the ground to a height of about 30 km. The data is used for the analysis of controllability and the decision to launch a carrier rocket. The system is designed and manufactured by the order of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Center For Operation Of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities” and contains a set of tools for the measurement of atmospheric parameters, the most advanced of which use global navigation systems such as GLONASS and GPS.
The commission for testing of the Upper-air Sounding System included employees of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Center For Operation Of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities”, its branches “Yuzhny” and “Vostochny” Space Centers, Ural Federal University, JSC “Ural Manufacturing Enterprise “Vector” (Ekaterinburg) and JSC “Radiy” (Kasli, Chelyabinsk Region). According to test results, the prototype of the Upper-air Sounding System received the allowance to carry out meteorological support of the flight tests of the rocket “Soyuz 2.1a”.
Ural Federal University (UrFU) is one of the largest higher educational institutions in Russia bringing together fundamental education and innovative approach towards the challenges of modern times.
Our aspiration is to become a world-class university in the heart of Eurasia committed to the complex and sustainable development of research and teaching.

Young Russian Researcher Creates Unique Biomechanical Hand
Fyodor Kotorov, a young researcher at Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg, Russia, developed a prototype of biomechanical fingers capable of lifting heavy items. The prototype has already passed primary tests with a canister of water.
“The idea of designing a mechanical hand came to me when I was watching a series of videos on biomedical engineering achievements, both Russian and international”, said Fyodor in his interview for Oblastnaya Gazeta. “When…
Glycine crystals can replace piezoelectric ceramics in biology and medicine
Crystals of glycine under a deformation can produce an electric charge considerably larger than conventional ceramics or a polymer. The scientists of Ural Federal University in collaboration with researchers from Limerick University (Ireland) and University of Aveiro (Portugal) measured piezoelectric coefficients in beta-glycine crystals for the first time and found that their values are comparable with the coefficients in barium titanate or lead zirconate titanate used in the manufacture of…
Russian Scientists Make Electric-Hydrodynamic Heater More Efficient and Environm …
Scientists from Ural Federal University and Karaganda State Technical University simulated the work of an electric-hydrodynamic heater (EHDH) and proposed a method for its improvement. The resulting installation, which dimensions range from 0.8×1×1 m to 1.5×2×2.5 m, can be used in autonomous heating, hot water and air conditioning systems. The installation is environmentally friendly and easy to maintain; it allows consumers to set their own mode of operation. The results…
