KiteDesk Record Winner for Building World's Largest Kite

Tampa, FL - April 1, 2016 - Area software company can now add World’s Record Holder to list of achievements. KiteDesk is proud to announce it has accomplished a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title achievement for constructing the world’s largest kite.

This stunning feat was accomplished using over 1,000 yards of nylon, kevlar, and dacron, over 750 dowels, and countless balls of twine. “Our preference would have been to stick with one fabric,” stated KiteDesk CEO, Sean Burke, “but, we struggled to secure the quantity we needed locally to ensure successful construction.”

Orders of Magnitude
The nearly 5,000-ft kite construction took a little over two weeks to complete, more than doubling the previous record holder’s size, the Megabite kite, which had held record since 2005. Primary credit belongs to KiteDesk CTO Jared Rodriguez, known for his aerospace background, who oversaw the project.

“Getting such a large object aloft was the primary challenge,” indicated Rodriguez. “But we also wanted to get high, as high as possible-- not an insignificant challenge given the natural environment of Florida. Humidity is not always your friend.”

The team also overcame a bevy of other obstacles in their quest.

Neighborhood Reacts
The Ybor City Council and a neighborhood animal advocate have made several attempts to halt construction due to the impact on Ybor City’s free-range chicken population. Council spokesperson Justin Case stated, “This Kite building operation has wreaked havoc on the poor chickens. They have been building their kite in a lot that is a popular roosting site, and the chickens have been expressing their disapproval. You wouldn’t believe the clucking and cock-a-doodle-dooing that has been going on. We thought for sure we could get them shut down due to the noise, but the decibel levels were slightly below those set by the city noise ordinance.”

Neighborhood resident, Ona House, has been actively rallying animal advocates and picketing the build site since the displacement of the hens. “Tampa’s Ybor City chickens are under great stress due to losing their roosting ground. Egg production has dropped to historic lows - we haven’t seen numbers like this since those four hurricanes hit Florida in 2004,” stated House. “If this keeps up, the chickens who have called Ybor City home for generations, could realistically face extinction.”

KiteDesk CEO Burke has remained unflappable amidst all the controversy. “I’m not really sure what all the ruckus is all about. This all started at a team building exercise on March 17th. I’m not saying any green beer was involved, but let’s just say, what started off as a competition between the dev team and the sales team on who could build the largest, yet still flyable kite with stuff they could find around the office, somehow escalated into what is now the world’s largest kite.”

Let It Fly
“I am all for teamwork, and loved their gumption. Being that we employ some of the smartest software engineers, salespeople and designers in the country, it didn’t seem outrageous to believe we could build the largest kite, nor that we could also get that kite to fly.”
