Supporting an active lifestyle: functional ingredients

At this year’s Vitafoods, Kaneka Pharma Europe will showcase nutraceutical ingredients backed by science that assist sports performance and help to maintain a healthy body. One of these is Ubiquinol, the directly active form of coenzyme Q10, which is crucial for energy production as well as being a powerful antioxidant. Ubiquinol counteracts several diseases associated with aging and supports muscular health and recovery. The body’s natural levels decline with age and it is virtually impossible to compensate for this via diet alone. However, new application forms like granulate sticks, hard gelatine and chewable capsules as well as mouth sprays make supplementation easy, even on the move. The company will also be exhibiting the liquorice root extract Glavonoid™, which helps to reduce visceral fat.

Ubiquinol is found in every human cell and is an essential part of the respiratory chain, which produces more than 95 percent of the energy the body needs to sustain its vital functions. It is also the most powerful lipid-soluble antioxidant and protects cells from free radical damage and oxidative stress. Thanks to Kaneka’s unique production process, it is possible to deliver Ubiquinol in several stable application forms without any detrimental impact on efficacy. Filip Van hulle, Senior Sales and Marketing Manager at Kaneka’s Quality of Life Division, explains: “Ubiquinol is scientifically proven to counteract several age-related diseases and is essential for a fully functioning body. The latest products target active “Best Agers” who want to stay healthy, as well as athletes who are keen to optimise their immune defences and muscular capability.” New chewable Ubiquinol capsules are easy to ingest, even on the go, and have high consumer acceptance as they deliver a pleasant mouthfeel. By avoiding having to pass through the gastro-intestinal tract, Ubiquinol mouth sprays are rapidly absorbed via the lining of the mouth, while Ubiquinol granulate sticks contain a powder that melts in the mouth. All three application forms can be taken without water and offer additional support for healthy gums.

Kaneka will also present the liquorice root extract Glavonoid™. This provides unique dual support in fighting visceral fat, thanks to its ability to activate the body’s fat metabolism and suppress fat synthesis. Having held Novel Food status since 2011, Glavonoid™ can be used in food supplements and beverages based on milk, yoghurt, fruit and vegetables. Since 2015, Glavonoid™ has also been approved for extended use in foods for medical purposes and energy-restricted diets for weight reduction. Available as powder and a recently launched liquid form, Glavonoid™ is ideally suited for products aimed at the sports and fitness market.

Kaneka Pharma Europe is based in Brussels. It is a full subsidiary of Kaneka Japan, the world’s pioneer in natural Coenzyme Q10 and the only supplier of Ubiquinol (the active form of CoQ10).
Kaneka was founded in 1949 and is the only company to use natural yeast fermentation technology to produce Coenzyme Q10. Kaneka Q10 is the only self-affirmed GRAS CoQ10 and can be globally sourced from two production sites in the US and Japan, as well as from Kaneka’s warehouses in Brussels. Kaneka also developed the liquorice root extract Glavonoid™, which supports the reduction of visceral fat. With Novel Food approval having been granted in November 2011, the first products are now available on the European market. Kaneka’s company philosophy is based on a strong scientific grounding. Thus, the efficacy and safety of Kaneka Q10™, Ubiquinol and Glavonoid™ are well proven, and backed by a large number of scientific studies. For further information, please visit: www.kanekaQ10.info
