The Italian government has set aside USD 43.38 million to resolve a dispute involving the nation's two digital identification programs, the SPID and the CIE. Italy's Public Digital Identity System (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale, SPID) is mainly responsible for the country's success in adopting digital identities. Citizens use SPID to log in for online government services managed by private companies, some of which charge for ID activation. More people utilize the Public Digital Identity System (SPID) than the Cardta d'Identità elettronica (CIE), Italy's national ID card-based electronic identification system, the fastest-growing digital identity scheme. By the end of November 2022, almost 33 million digital IDs had been issued in SPID, accounting for 63% of Italy's adult population. Various digital identity vendors like Signicat and Jumio are focusing on Italy. For example, in September 2023, Signicat integrated SPID into its platform, allowing European companies and agencies to leverage SPID for efficient customer authentication and onboarding.
