'Acheron' - the award winning entry by Carrie Schechter.

American photographer Carrie Schechter wins the Best Static Art Award and Welsh filmmaker Gareth Lloyd wins the Best Animated Art Award in the Creative Graduate Prize 2007.

The online visual arts awards were launched in 2005 by web/print/live arts platform Medium Magazine and creative think tank and incubator Societás. Designed to recognise the best emerging illustrators, photographers and artists worldwide the awards annually attract entries from creative graduates in both the Developed and the Developing World. Last year’s prize was won by illustrator Li Li of Chang chun Jin Lin province in China, with photographer Lyza R. Perrenoud of Washington DC, USA voted First Runner Up and the photographer Judith Erwes from Germany voted Second Runner Up.

This year saw the creation of a new Creative Graduate Prize award category - short film, created for artists working with moving film and animated digital media. Entrants were invited to submit as many entries as they wished across the two awards categories of Static Art (photography/illustration) and Animated Art (short film) based on the theme ‘Travel’.

Best Static Art Award Winner Carrie Schechter of New York, a graduate of The School of Visual Arts and Brooks Institute of Photography, submitted an outstanding entry titled ‘The Five Rivers of Hades’, exploring classical mythology through photography. Of the several images she submitted the image ‘Acheron’ was selected as the winning entry for its expression of how man travels blindly through life, unaware of future events.

Best Animated Art Award Winner Gareth Lloyd of Pontyclun, who graduated with a BA (Hons) in Animation from the Glamorgan Centre for Art & Design Technology, submitted a compelling short film exploring how travel impacts on climate change and related issues, such as world energy markets.

The First Runner-Up prize was won by Cai Jia Eng of Singapore who studied at the Bartlett School Of Architecture (UCL) for his entry ‘Trip’ and the Second Runner-Up prize was won by Italian Elena Arzani, a Masters of Arts graduate of Central St. Martin's, London for her entry ‘Life Journey’.

The winners entries and those of the First and Second Runner Up will go on display in the Societás online gallery and will be featured in the next issue of Medium Magazine

Creative Graduate Prize Co-Founder and Medium Magazine Publisher Laurie Cansfield said of the awards ‘This year's competition has seen some outstanding entries from many different countries. The 'Travel' theme seems to have inspired some great work, and many of the artists really thought outside the box when creating it. The winner of the image category, Carrie Schechter, presented the judges with exactly what we were looking for. Her photography is beautiful, exciting, technically outstanding and involving in it's concept. Carrie and the two runners up (Cai Jia Eng, First Runner-Up with the illustration / game concept 'TRIP', and Elena Arzani, Second Runner-Up with the photograph 'A Life Journey') are skilled and accomplished visual artists. The new short film category was an exciting development that we will continue next year. Gareth Lloyd sets the standard for the 2008 prize with his thought-provoking film 'Peaknik Doomer'. The film looks at the impact of travel on the environment and presents information in a highly watchable way. It's a very well considered and well made film. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to everyone who entered’

Creative Graduate Prize Co-Founder and Societás CEO Melissa Sterry said of the awards ‘together with Medium Magazine we are expanding the Creative Graduate Prize to encompass the visual arts in their broadest context. As ever more tools emerge to enable visual artists to express their ideas, we will add to the award categories to embrace new developments. Looking forward to next year we are inviting a number of the most influential creatives working in the fields of illustration, photography, installation art and short film to the Creative Graduate Prize judging panel and those confirmed so far include influential illustrator Jason Brooks of Hed Kandi fame. Having run the awards for just three years we have been delighted at the speed at which global awareness of the awards as been achieved and hope to expand awareness of the awards yet further in 2008’.

Details of the Creative Graduate Prize 2008 will be announced in January.
